200k is plenty to live in the South but you just can’t live like a baller.

BR has a cheaper COL and is not named “Shreveport” or “Alexandria” which is why I picked it.

Genuine question for NOLA people - what’s the current annual tuition for Jesuit/Sacred Heart and an equivalent feeder school for elementary school?

$200K ain't what it used to be. If it were me, I'd be saving as much as possible so that I could retire early.

But, if saving isn't your bag, I'd say move somewhere like Baker/Zachary or even Livingston/Ascension. Put kids in public school. Use the money you'd otherwise use for their private tuition to rent a small apartment downtown. Have two places to live--or a private frickpad that the wife doesn't know about.

Jesuit is the cheapest of the all boys Catholic league schools at around $9200. Sacred Heart isn’t really comparable—they are an ISAS school and are $18k/yr for high school. Dominican/MCA are the closest socioeconomic analogs to Jesuit, but honestly none of the all-girls schools are on the same academic level.

Nola? 200 ain’t that much You're right, it'd only put you in the top 5% of earners.

I believe 200k in NOLA is more exclusive than the top 5%.

A quick Google shows median income at 37k.

So let’s just assume 2 boys and 1 girl, that’s $36,200 a year if the good feeder schools are close to the cost of Jesuit. Down to $170k.

The cost of a house to comfortably fit 5 in a good neighborhood and cost of feeding/clothing said family, along with two cars (eventually 5) and the occasional vacation?

No, I don’t think $200k is enough. I’m not saying it CAN’T be done, I’m saying it can’t be done comfortably.

You have 3 children, ages 3 to 14. Again, 200k.

Will you take the job in:

A) Alexandria
B) Shreveport
C) Baton Rouge
D) New Orleans

I would abandon my children and their mother, who I reckon is worn out and ragged by now, and I would take that $200k somewhere far away from Louisiana.

200k would be more like 130k after taxes insurance, 401k etc. You are down below 100k already

I didn’t even want to bother getting into all that. But yes, you’re right.

Goddamn, Louisiana is such a shitty state. These all sound terrible. But I’d go with Nola.

So you're saying $170k/year in a hypothetical where you send your kids to public school in Nola is not doable?

are you implying that 100k free cash flow is not enough for a year? You can buy a 350k house more than comfortably with that and still have plenty left over to save

$200k a year can get three kids through private school.

If I can afford to send my kids to private school, then everything else comes second and they go to private school. Period.

Especially in New Orleans.

$200k a year with 3 kids isn’t enough for New Orleans whenever you factor in private tuition.

Such an OT answer. $200k a year would have you living nicely in NOLA.

And NOLA is the easy answer to this question.

For a family of 5? If it was just a couple then hell yes it would be enough. And my answer would be New Orleans.

Kids are fricking expensive.
