There were still nurseries when my boys were born in 2017 and 2019
I'm working on a NOLA area hospital renovation that has a new, decent sized nursery (20-25 bassinets), so it's definitely still a thing.

That was some sketchy shite, because that Dr's sperm distribution was spread within close proximity in less than a 50 mile radius. Some of his offspring could've easily procreated with their sibling without ever knowing.
There was a documentary about that guy and all of his kids and more than one of them openly suggested that they considered moving out of Indiana for this exact reason.

Possibly because his daughter looks nothing like him.
There is literally an evolutionary meme of babies looking like the father for this very reason

If you read the whole post on Reddit, Dad was suspicious because both he and his wife have blue eyes and his daughter has brown.

There was a mixup with me when leaving the hospital. I forget if my parents took the wrong baby home or they had to get me from another house, but yeah...this does happen
WTF...thread hijack, but who cares..tell us more! I'm fascinated to hear how it went down or was figured out

Well that's certainly not the way I expected that story to end. I wonder what the best way to go about that. You turn this thing into a huge lawsuit and media circus and the kid could end up totally fricked up. If this is true, that is one slippery arse slope.

Could you imagine one family being rich as hell and the other being dirt poor... and the kids found out they went to the wrong families... What kind of shite storm that would kick off...?
Exactly. As a parent, I cannot imagine giving up a child I’d nurtured and loved whether she was biologically mine or not. However, I also would not be able to let go of the idea that I had a biological child out there somewhere. I’d be compelled to make sure the family raising her were good people. More than income level, I’d want to make sure that she had two loving parents in a functional household. What if parents find out their biological child is living in a rough home? Imagine a single mom with boyfriends cycling in and out. Imagine drugs or criminality in the family. I could envision a scenario in which the more functional family not only wants to keep the child they’ve been raising but might also try to gain custody of their biological daughter.
If both families don’t share similar values, it really could be an even bigger shitshow than it already is.

My family's genetics is so strong that it's difficult for close family members to tell if a baby picture is me or my younger brother. There is no doubt that I come from my father's line.
I haven't heard the story in literally decades, but I think I went home with the wrong family initially because when they presented the other kid to my mom as they were leaving she was basically like "this is not my child" and it was resolved quickly. I know the "this is not my child" part is what they told me so it doesn't make sense the other way.

If not made up, what is rationale for initial “paternity test”. that is never justified.kid didn’t look like dad?
there is a known rate of non-paternity due to bone marrow transplants and need for testing but that is not a “paternity test”.

If this were true and by some chance the other family was a good, like-minded family, what's the best solution?
Honestly, probably moving close to one or the other and becoming extremely close friends such that you'd either permanently have the biological parents as a major factor in their life or transition at some point? Obviously that only works out well with two sets of wholesome individuals who value the kids above everything else.

grab all 3 wrong tags that are in the delivery room?
I'm not saying its impossible because I don't know every hospitals procedures, but I know most hospitals use the tag method and keep the babies in the rooms with the parents for at least the last 10 years
The tags are printed off in the room. Those tags never leave the room, not on someone's wrist/ankle for this very reason. The days of switched at birth are gone without some type of bad intentions on the part of hospital personnel.
Also, the ankle tag and/or the umbilical cord clip has an RFID chip in it that will sound an alarm if the baby leaves the area.

I don’t believe any of this shite
This reads just like those fiction love stories that my mom and aunts repost on facebook
Thanks for the minute and a half of entertainment though

This is crazy.
This sounds like a tragic case of mistaken identity/baby swap at the hospital nursery. I can't imagine what the parents are going through right now.
Regardless, that hospital is gonna get the hell sued out of them. And rightly so.
ETA:I'm also an adoptive dad, and this scares the hell out of me.

The kids in this fictional piece were five years old bro

That's insane. I have a 5 year old daughter. I couldn't just swap her out with the right one. That's an impossible situation.
Have a guy I went to school with who raised a kid and didn't find out he wasn't his until the kid was 5. Extremely tough situation for him and the kid.
But this is just a completely other level (if true). You're right.. even if you found the "right" one.. you've already raised yours, and someone else has presumably raised yours. Insane situation.
