At this point, not leaving is just a death wish. Just sheer fricking ignorance.
This rhetoric doesn’t help either though.
There are people in Naples that are probably fine to stay. There are a ton of resources out there that try to predict worst case surge. Check the map and make an educated decision.
Praying/hoping it away isn’t an educated way to make decisions.

Do you think this is my first rendezvous with a hurricane? I am in no way downplaying it. It is going to be bad. Helene was like a gnat for FL and WRECKED Ashville. I know all of the worries, the concerns. As I said before, this one has had me on edge, not personally, but because I think he is going to be really, REALLY bad.
I am not arrogant, nor over-confident. Does anyone want to drown in their own home? Not generally. I have given this thought. I was at work this morning and after given the choice to work from home this afternoon, I came home and tidied up.

I am inland enough not to be afraid
We thought we were too when Katrina hit. We left Long Beach and went to Hattiesburg to stay with my brother. We were not and ended up huddled around the kitchen island with our IDs in our pockets so they could identify us.

New Orleans did too.

Pretty idiotic to stay in the face of this.

You said nothing about shooting it away.

quote:Well this is just an all around stupid thought. God's grace is giving you a brain to think with to save yourself. God doesn't block storm surge.
I saw that. I am willing it away. I may be tiny but I am fierce! This tiny piece of ground is ours to protect and with God's grace we will stay dry.

Thanks for sharing those maps, DeCat. I’ve had the surge map sent to some friends to try to convince them to evacuate.
Glad to pass them along. Hope they give people in Fla. a clear idea of how very high and far inland surge water goes in coastal communities. They were really helpful to my family's decision- making for Francine in La.
The NHS updates them as the storm approaches - you can see the advisory counter in the box next to the storm name. Currently on adv. 11 for Milton.
FYI they will let you view legacy storms, For Francine I looked back at Ida's surge map model to get an idea of just how accurate they were for her.
Pretty dang accurate.
Tho the NHS does underline that it is experimental mapping, I
would definitely be willing to make evac. decisions based on their modeling.

I can’t imagine how long they are getting to be without electricity. Helene has thousands of e workers already tied up and still have a month to go before coming home.

Liz's area has a 6-10ft storm surge prediction over on CNN in this clip I do believe:

If you aren't at risk from the storm surge you'll survive. It'll just suck a lot
Not necessarily with a direct hit from a cat 4-5, it would depend on proximity to trees, the quality of the house and whether the roof is up to storm code.
You lose a roof in a cat5 near the coast and you’re in a world of ****.
A direct hit from a Cat 5 at the beach compared to a cat 1 is like comparing a tiger to a house cat.

Our SLEMCO guys returned and they just rolled out again today. Not sure exactly where they’re headed.
The outage map does show fantastic progress. Guessing it doesn’t show those who CANNOT be restored at this point.
