Why they haven't already is mind boggling.
It's because if they go contraflow they can't get any more gas trucks south down the highway. Everyone would get stranded on the highway as loads of people ran out of gas and no one could get around them. Basically, after further review, the idea of contraflow, in Florida (where apparently all the gas has to be trucked south), was not a workable solution to begin with.

possibly turn back into the Atlantic..
It was barely off the coast of Africa when this was the mode
There is a reason people in NC & SC were nervous. There were numerous model runs that took it from Miami and then back out in the Atlantic with a 2nd landfall as far north as the Mid Atlantic.

Warmer
See for yourself. Also the hurricane will strengthen as it gets past Cuba and the keys and back into open water.

If this will be true, my uncle and cousin in cape coral will be dicey at best.
Check out the NHC Inundation Map. Cape Coral actually looks pretty good, considering the circumstances. Areas of Sanibel and Ft Myers Beach are in real trouble.

Greatest town name in the US is Punta Gorda. Learned that one during Charley.

Damn the weather channel is cold, they just rolled up to a 70 year old dude showed him pics of the island destruction and said "do you wish you'd tried to leave earlier?"

Could that weaken it enough to counter any strengthening it will do before it hits the keys?
If it heads at that trajectory it is certainly plausible. Skirting Cuba wouldn't do much, but taking it on full force would be a different story.

For those curious, go back and read the early pages in this thread to get a feel for how fricking complicated it was and sit in awe that our computers and forecasters got as close as they did six or seven days ago.
The NHC absolutely dominated the track up to this point and that was also very tricky given the large scale setup across the Atlantic. The north turn has always been not much better than guessing and the NHC hasn't had to shift that much. Overall, great job by the best.

Florida officials have done the best job they can do supplying gas even this late in the evacuations.
Would be in way better if a position if they would allow pipelines in the state

Is Jose a threat to get into the Gulf?

They could have opened one lane on the southbound side to bus, RVs and trucks. Put a max speed limit of say 35-45 on it and police escort the fuel trucks down in the next lane.
