sometimes some of these models will have something weird built into the formulas where it takes some weird factor that rarely happens into consideration that fricks with the output. My guess is HMON is taking one of those weird factors into account.

Could that be true? WTF would the wind speeds be?
Those same images show the max winds being 180mph. We've seen storms get down into the 890s and have winds in the 180-190mph range.

If any of you have been to Ivan's on White Bay on Jost Van Dyke this is what's left of it. Goddamn I hate these storms. I'll probably have more pics in the coming days to post from my friends down there who are hopefully safe. Yes, this is the Ivan's that Kenny Chesney sings about in Somewhere In The Sun.

Praying most made it out safely, all that truly matters. Property is replaceable but a life isn't.

quote:what a lot of people dont realize is that atmospheric science is still a really really young science in the grand scheme of things. i mean it wasnt really studied on a huge scale until the 1900's and didnt make huge jumps until the implementation of radar. Just about every situation brings about something new to study and look at to better help us understand what is happening. People always like to shite on forecasters for being wrong but with how little is truly known about how the atmosphere works the general accuracy meteorologists are able to forecast is really amazing.
I have to imagine they learn a ton from each scenario like this

I can't imagine what Miami is going to look like if it comes ashore there. Miami beach will be part of the ocean.

More and more reports coming out from St. Martin saying the island is decimated. Go to Twitter with hashtag #stmartin.

A bunch of stuff is still standing, impressive.

That's the bar and restaurant. I think. It's hard to tell what is what in the picture.

Barbuda aerial footage now showing LINK It certainly looks bad but some of the properties made out better than others. Did see a Cell Phone tower which was snapped in half that was very impressive to see the power of the Hurricane.

Does anyone know what exactly is going to keep Irma out of the gulf? I've just never seen a hurricane make pretty much a 90 degree turn like that before
