Can't find water for the past two days, going to try really early tomorrow morning. Got stocked up on canned goods and cat food (for cats, I suppose for humans too if things are apocalypse level).

Seriously man, get your mom and GTFO out of there. You're not going to be able to "ride it out" in South Florida with the conditions you described. You'll both risk dying. I'm not even kidding.

How old? You need to be as serious as you have ever been..and tell her she is putting lives in danger.

It's not an overestimating statement.

Is your mom immobile?

If not, you two need to GTFO of Dodge.

That is reasonable if Irma is to your east. If it comes in through Tampa on the west, I'd be much more concerned.

Cat 1 or 2 isn't a joke either though.

Yeah, getting 50 or 75 miles inland isn't going to be good enough to escape Irma. 150 might be pushing it.

You're right, there's just no easy way to put it, South Fla is in a bad, dangerous spot with these max winds and gust. You'd like to think some dry air will get sucked, but if this thing stays a buzz saw, not good.

Were you in Miami? I didn't have running water at all for a day and a half in Harvey and minimally running water for 5 days, so I can only imagine what a real wind storm can do.

I think Irma is going to be a really tough storm for the people who decide to stick around and ride it out in Florida.

Yeah worst case would be through Tampa over us.

We got pretty good winds during Matthew last year here and stood up well. Could have been a lot worse though had it shifted over.

Barbuda starting to really get some wind. Sustained around 90MPH and gusts of 120MPH. It'll get real bad real soon.

That's my apartment.

I'm not at all familiar with storm surge in that area. I live right next to the water, and my street floods every time a serious rain comes through.

If she comes up the west coast of Florida and smashes St. Pete I figure I'd be in trouble(my stuff, im not staying). If there's not a direct hit in St. Pete, then I'll be fine.

What sucks is I have family or best friends from St. Pete to Tampa, Brandon, Lakeland, parents live in Cocoa Beach, and in Ft. Lauderdale.

Figuring out a place to meet is a fricking shite show right now.

I can't man, can't leave my mom. She's old and not wanting to leave the area, so I'm stuck in south fla.

Unless it's medically risky, pack her up and move to safer territory. This isn't the sort of hurricane you want to ride out if you don't absolutely need to. If you're low lying or just near the coast, youre risking your life.

Then you're looking at the real possibility of weeks without running water and electricity in the middle of a South Florida summer.

It's just not worth the risk involved to stay.

Unfortunately, I'm stuck in south fla for this storm, and terribly unprepared. Best case scenario, I am able to move inland a couple miles, but it's still south fla, and the houses are crappy, and we have no shutters, no plywood, no generator, no water, etc.
Gonna ride it out, but wish I was more prepared (know I still have several days to find some water and basic supplies).

Im in west palm. Where are you riding it out?

I rode out Katrina and Wilma in Lauderdale. We lost power for a total of 26 days from both storms combined. We didn't have shutters, plywood or a generator and we were fine. As far as water, fill your bathtub(s) as well. And, those little south Florida homes are bomb proof if a surge doesn't get them, as they have been battle tested. Hold your head up and go grab some food. Good luck.
