et's just say, for the sake of argument, that this thing plays out according to the model below, with the eye passing just to the east of Miami. How much of a "break" would Miami catch being just west of the eye? What kind of conditions would Miami see?
Miami would catch a huge break. Winds would be strong,up to 100 or so MPH, but nothing close to Irma's full potential.
These 185 mph winds are in a very small area.

you have to grab your mom and haul arse... you are not prepared for this, and are in serious trouble... 185mph isn't anything to be stubborn about... and neither is/are the week(s) of apocalypse surroundings of no water food or help that follow... this isnt a cat2... this thing is unholy hell headed your way... it's life or death, and there are no do overs.... you can't call timeout
Please leave and go somewhere safe.... your mom may be mad, but you both will be alive to discuss it
Heartily agree.
Man, I went through Charley (cat 4), Frances and Jeanne, they were all within 3 weeks of each other and the experiences are burned into my brain. I had no power for a week after Charley, after Frances, I couldn't get to my house, there was a little lake near it that flooded the road and after Jeanne, I couldn't get to the road to my house for 2 months.
Get what you can and head north. It's nothing to mess with.

I gave this advice to some Houston folks. You don't want to be uncomfortable. If you can leave then get out of S Florida.
Loss of Roof
Loss of Power
Home collapsing
Flooding
Unable to Restock Food
I mean, Jesus these people need to get their heads out their asses this isn't some pussy Cat 1 with 80 mph winds. Irma is going to probably hit as a Cat 4 or even Cat 3 at landfall.
ETA: Yea Young folks can probably make it but are you going to put your mom through something like that? This isn't even a hard decision.

Sounds like you were neighbors with my exs family. They went home to a slab.

Winds sustained @ 107 mph, gusting to 132 in Barbuda.

You mind calling my job for me and giving them this same speech ?

the absolutely only way I "wouldnt be able to leave" would be because I could not physically overpower her and put her arse in the car
my mom died in January. There is not a single reason I wouldn't move heaven and earth to get her the frick out of the path of this shite

even going through a cat 1 is awful, especially if it stalls like issac did in 12, sat in Metairie for 2 weeks with no power for ~2 weeks, the floors in the house started sweating from the moisture to the point we had to use old bed sheets to walk on the floors, hate to imagine anything worse than that.

How many people?
We aren't freaking out or anything.
With enough notice, it isn't hard to get on the safe side of the state.
But this one is freaking everyone out and nobody is on the same page as far as how to skurt it.
