It looks like the slight interaction with land and the forces stalling the storm to drive it north are hindering the strom’s development a little. But it’s still extremely powerful.
there's also an ongoing eyewall replacement that's helping decrease the maximum winds. The eye is looking a bit ragged on radar now as a result... but it could regain some intensity as it pulls off of Grand Bahama this afternoon.

The government has put out updates but nothing from residents. I’m concerned about reports from Bahamas yesterday that callers from the Abacos were not allowed during news casts. There haven’t even been text messages like after Katrina. There were reports of bodies floating yesterday and I have zero doubt there will be huge loss of life but I hope I’m wrong.

I wonder if Morgan Freeman will be the leading actor when Hollywoood makes the movie about this storm ? Obviously going to blame Trump for causing the Bahamas to get raked.

1 mph wow. Didn’t know that was possible

From a resident of Great Abaco Island...WOW...these people need help and need it soon...
quote:
Nobody on this island was spared. 95% of people don't have a house left. No car, no food, no gas. Power lines down everywhere and still lots of flooding.
I'm able to communicate because the Aliv cell provider has kept up throughout the storm. BTC is what most people have and they have been down since 11 AM yesterday. This is why many people are unaccounted for.
Don't lose faith about family and friends, they most likely cannot communicate. Many people took refuge at other people's homes and we hope this is the case with everyone else that lost their homes.

Yeah. If you started walking westward in the eye* at a casual pace as soon as the eastern eyewall made landfall eastern Grand Bahama, you'd have outrun the storm and would have made it to the western eyewall by now.
*don't do this

New report from Abacos. No damage assessment yet as still too dangerous. Still no word from Iguana Cay (
) or any of the Cays but I’m praying most went to main islands to ride out storm.

Wow, they closed access to I95 from I26 in SC. Any north-south travelers are going to have a tough day today.

See my post just below yours. I posted just before reading your post.

At what point if the northern turn doesn’t start should my folks in Lakeland, FL be concerned?
Posted on 9/2/19 at 9:33 am to NorthEndZone
Thanks! Saw that after my post of Abacos news report. However, there have been no contact from anyone on the Cays and the report of catastrophic damage in Marsh Harbour and surrounding areas is expected but chilling.

It will turn.
Thank you, road. I’m getting a little nervous waiting on it happening. Monster storm

Another 50 miles and that stall is over west palm
Lucky AF with this one
I can’t even imagine if that would have happened here. Jesus

That is about what I expected to hear from there. Sounds similar to the worst parts of Puerto Rico for Maria.
The fact that a cell provider stayed online throughout the storm is the most surprising news. Some of the US providers should take note of how they did it.

They're pretty much cut off from any communications... and with the slow moving storm still overhead they probably won't get anyone in or out until later this week.
I'm terrified to see what's going to happen to Grand Bahama after 24+ hours of cat 4-5 winds
The communication situation is so bad on Abaco right now that multiple fishing outfits have reported all they know is their outfit EPIRBs were activated yesterday afternoon. Scary.

It's a terrifying monster for sure.
For them to be in danger in Lakeland would mean that all the world's knowledge about hurricanes is wrong and we have to start over.
But, do remain on the ready for the unknown.

We received word that a friend on Abaco (near Marsh Harbour) is alive and well. No details just yet but it's a relief.
