Athens... Athens is the next Madison... just opened a brand new high school. You can get more bang for your buck on a home in Athens, compared to Huntsville, or Madison.

Ya, but you're going to run in to the same issue with living in OXR...commute time.

I'd move out in the county. New Market is a good area. NE of Huntsville.

Grissom and Huntsville have gone down hill quite a bit. The state scores make that abundantly clear

I'm not denying that there are a bunch of bad apples in each school but I am a Huntsville alum and even back then the school was more diverse than Grissom. I think Huntsville High has dealt with the segregation order pretty well and from the parents I speak with they say that it hasn't been an issue minus the first year it was implemented. I think Madison schools are going to be overcrowded very quickly. I think they added 538 students in the past year alone. They can't keep up with that influx much longer. They will have to build more schools.

Really I'm just trying to persuade anyone that is coming here from out of state or anywhere else to give Huntsville a try because I like to see my city grow and restaurants/bars downtown stay afloat. I guess I'm being a little selfish

Trust me, I understand. It's great to finally come home to visit friends/family and actually see a thriving downtown with stuff to do. I moved away during the dark times of only having Sleazy T's, Humphreys, and that one other bar I can't remember the name of.

I overwhelmingly recommend single folks to live in Huntsville for just that reason. But for folks with an established family and kids, especially working on Redstone or CRP, unfortunately Madison is just the better choice.

I live very close to there, right behind Hazel Green HS.

It probably is, but I just couldn't handle that traffic. Plus he can get much more bang for his buck as far as size of house in the county.

If I moved back to Huntsville I would probably move into the HHS district just simply because of where I would end up working (the most promising opportunities I will have over the next 5 years are going to be UAH, Drake State, or Calhoun). If I didn't move into the HHS district I would probably live NE in the Gurley area. My brother just moved into NE Huntsville (around Monte Sano) so that's another option as well. My family live in South Huntsville... where I grew up, but I just don't know if I would want to live there - or could even afford it.

I just moved from from south Huntsville to Madison. South Huntsville is going down hill, and it won't be long until it'll be just like North Huntsville (which isn't good). But Madison is pretty nice with a really good school system.

The only problem I really with Madison is that it is becoming overpopulated pretty fast. The infrastructure/road layouts wasn't intended for the growth that has taken place.

The only place in the city of Huntsville that I'd live would be Hampton Cove or possibly Jones Valley, but housing for both of those places is pretty expensive. And I would considering sending my kids to a private school if I lived there, although Huntsville High may not be as bad as all the other Huntsville high schools.

Again, I love it in Madison. But you better buy a house quick, because the prices are rising fast.

Huntsville City Schools are not as bad as reported. Some are bad some are really good. Huntsville has been under a deseg order for 50 years. My kids are in Huntsville schools and are doing great. There are lot of good public school options in the Huntsville area. Just do a little more research. Madison is fine and there are good county schools as well. Everyone saying all the Huntsville schools are terrible are painting with a very large brush. Lots of very successful kids are graduating from Huntsville High and Grissom every year. I would focus on those feeder systems.

Yup! I grew up in Meridianville and went to Hazel Green up through 8th grade before we moved to south Huntsville.

eh.. I just don't see this. While I understand the sentiment and people complaining about Grissom, and Grissom moving into the middle of South Huntsville... this just isn't happening.

My brother who is a Doctor of Aerospace Engineering and works for NASA just moved to South Huntsville in the last 3 years, and his home value has gone up 20% already (it might not be exactly 20%, but it's something stupid like that). Extremely smart engineers that he goes to church with, works with, etc. are all buying property in that area because of the entry to the arsenal down there, and Grissom moving closer to the Parkway.

My sister-in-law is married to a Physicist that works on the Arsenal, and she's in administration for a company on the base, all of them live within a mile of my parents in South Huntsville. There are new homes going up all the time down there, and the prices are sky rocketing because of the entrance down there (and Martin Rd. getting the upgrade).

South Huntsville has older homes, but younger people love retro, so I just don't see South Huntsville ever becoming anything like North Huntsville (which is an entirely different subject, because North Huntsville is becoming a Hipster zone recently as well...)

yeah I know, my sister-in-law has a high schooler at Grissom, a middle schooler at Challenger, and 2 elementary school students at Farley. She complains about Grissom - but her son just got a 31 on his ACT

ETA: still doesn't stop me having a knee jerk reaction as a Grissom grad who moved away and now has a 7 month old to worry about

Madison - will be the #1 consensus here. Close to Hsv, upcoming city with a good school system.

Priceville - 20-30 min interstate commute. Smaller than Madison but 5-10 min to anything in Decatur. Good school system(alum here).

Decatur - 20-30 min commute(mostly interstate). A lot of folks will shite on Decatur but there are some nice areas around Pt. Mallard, and it’s cheaper to buy. The elementary schools in that area are really good. Middle School and High School have mixed demographics and don’t test well.

Hartselle - small city south of Decatur/Priceville. 30-40 interstate commute. Hartselle schools havethe best academic/athletic combination in the area, possibly the state.

I wouldn’t mind living in the country a little ways with some land to raise chickens. I’m not stuck on some tract home communities. But my #1 priority is the school system for the kids.

I moved to an older subdivision (Sandhurst) behind the Walmart on the South Pkwy back in 2007, and I'll be luck to get what I paid for it. Now there are a few new subdivisions that have just been built, and a couple that are being built back behind that Walmart, but I personally wouldn't buy anything on the West side of the Parkway. I work with a couple of people that just bought in one of the "newer" subdivisions that was just built back there, and they are already having some car break ins being reported, and are getting nervous that they may have made a mistake.

Now I may have exaggerated somewhat by comparing it to North Huntsville, but I stand by my view that South Huntsville is going downhill. A lot of the shopping centers along the Parkway in South Huntsville are seeing businesses vacate, and the buildings are getting rundown. And the overpasses that were just added (even though they were terribly needed) aren't going to help those shopping centers. It's definitely not what it was 10-15 years ago. Now the closer you get to Jones Valley, the better it gets of course.

Seriously, check out the New Market area. Close to Huntsville and I-565. Both the elementary schools are good.

I work for a home builder and we have subdivisions all over the city/county. Hit me up if you need some assistance finding a house.
