From 1999 to 2015, more than 1,000 15-year-olds married in Missouri. Of those, The Star’s review of data shows, more than 300 married men age 21 or older, with some in their 30s, 40s and 50s. Assuming they had premarital sex, those grooms would be considered rapists.

..
“They wanted me to get married,” Ashley, now 24 and the mother of four, said. “I knew I shouldn’t have been making that decision that young. It was just something they told me that, like, I had to do or my child’s father would go to jail.”

..
“The reason why the issue of child marriage is so interesting is that it really forces us to think of what decisions kids are capable of making on their own, and what decisions they actually need to be protected from because they are too young and too vulnerable and they get it wrong,” Oberman said.

Interesting read. Not sure how I feel about it.

ETA it’s the statutory rape laws I don’t know how I feel about, the parents forcing their child into marriage are pieces of shite.

Allegedly children as young as 6 are capable of saying they are the opposite sex so marriage at 15 should be a piece of cake decision

I mean, there are mormons in every state that do this. Hardly seems like a story. Probably happens WAY more in Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada

Or, how twisted is the story to fit the writer's agenda?

Of the 3 "girls" (women when I knew 2 of the 3) who married at 13, yes thirteen, they all 3 married with parents consent, not pressure. The teens in 2/3 of the cases pressured their parents into consenting.

The outlier is the near sister-in-law. She married my college gf's brother who is 6 months older than me. He was 23 at the time. Her parents encouraged the marriage just to get rid of her. And yeah, she was THAT bad. Within 6 months of marrying, the tramp had screwed with almost every guy in the rural area they lived. Probably screwed around more than she screwed her husband.

The other 2 were pregnant at the time they married, but they got that way to pressure their parents into consent. They had no regrets either even though they divorced. They married 17-18 year old guys and divorced in their mid 20's.

Come to think of it. I don't know of any 14-16 year old's getting married. A handful of 17's maybe.

As the parent of one a 13 year old is developmentally not ready for life as a modern adult and shouldn’t be getting married. It might have worked hundreds of years ago but life was a lot different then. I don’t believe for a second there wasn’t parental pressure (maybe none that you saw but no doubt there).

Sorry man but I disagree 100%.

More than 200,000 children married in US over the last 15 years

The youngest wedded were three 10-year-old girls in Tennessee who married men aged 24, 25 and 31 in 2001. The youngest groom was an 11-year-old who married a 27-year-old woman in the same state in 2006.

Children as young as 12 were granted marriage licences in Alaska, Louisiana and South Carolina, while 11 other states allowed 13-year-olds to wed.

A 14-year-old girl married a 74-year-old man in Alabama, while a 17-year-old wed a 65-year-old groom in Idaho.
