Humans could land on Mars DECADES AGO

A FORMER astronaut who spent 166 days in space said NASA had the technology to travel to Mars half a century ago, but scientists decided against it.
Retired International Space Station Commander Chris Hadfield shocked the world saying the same technology that took the man to the Moon could have sent people to Mars.
He said: "We could send people to Mars decades ago.
"The technology that took us to the Moon and back when I was just a kid — that technology can take us to Mars."
But no astronaut would have survived the journey, he said.
In fact, he believes the 140 million miles separating the Red Planet from Earth would be fatal to anyone brave enough to attempt the journey, despite the fact that the space rockets would likely succeed to take them there.

Mr Hadfield said: "The majority of the astronauts that we send on those missions wouldn't make it. They’d die.”
Mars is 660 times further than the Moon, meaning a return journey there would last between 500 days to three years.
The dangers faced by astronauts on their trips to the Moon, starvation, the risk of explosion and the exposure to radiations, would be increased immensely by the length of this incredible journey.
And the fact that even new space programmes like SpaceX still rely on chemical propellent to leave Earth increases the dangers.
The greater the distance to the destination, the more space is needed for fuel reserves, sacrificing space for food.
quote:
There are a number of systems that could mitigate the effects of radiations and risks of starvation, such as a different type of fuel, lightweight shielding, hibernation capsules, and bioregenerative life-support systems, but none of the players involved in the new space race have come up with similar solutions yet, Mr Hadfield said.
During Mr Hadfield’s career, the former astronaut flew inside two NASA space shuttles, a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and lived aboard the International Space Station.
But despite his experience with groundbreaking technology, he can still be marvelled by its advancement.
He said: ”Spaceflight was impossible when I was born.

NASA believes the first trip to the red planet could be just a decade away.
Following US President Donald Trump’s approval of Space Policy Directive 1 in December 2017, the American space agency said it has plans to send a man to Mars in the 2030s.
The Space Policy Directive 1 represented a jump ahead in the colonisation of space, as it called for expanded human exploration of the solar system.
Following the signature, NASA called the decision a “change in national space policy”, providing Washington with a US-led integrated programme “with private sector partners for a human return to the Moon, followed by missions to Mars and beyond”.

So he's saying that we could have landed human corpses on Mars decades ago? Brilliant.

I could've gone to Starkville a couple of years ago. Why go? Nothing there either.

By the same logic, humans could have landed on the sun decades ago.

Aliens make it all the time. Were screwed now.

It's fricking embarrassing that yesterday it's been 49 years since we landed on the Moon and don't have a Moon base. We've only returned to the Moon 5 times and the last was in 1972. I will be very pissed off this time next year when we make it to the 50th anniversary and then be incredibly pissed off if we make it to December 11th 2022 and still haven't gone back.
I'd love nothing more than for China to land on the Moon, because you can bet your arse we'd be on Mars within the decade. The guilty secret is the space race is a glorified dick measuring contest. If the Earth were the size of a basketball, then relatively speaking the Moon would be the size of a baseball 30 feet across the room. How far have we gone since 1972 from that basketball? 3/8 of an inch. So it's a 3/8 of an inch dick vs a 30 footer. Once it's tied, then we'll get our asses back there.

No shite, space is a vacuum. The rocket just need to give them a push in the right direction and the corpses could make it out of the solar system (eventually).

That's because it didn't happen, because jet fuel can't melt steel beams.

how long were the trips to the moon?

Decades ago all we had were Apollo command modules and Lem's...that's a 6 month ride, one way, being spam in a can.

My god what a click-bait article

Just grow potatoes using poop for a growing medium. I saw this on a documentary featuring Matt Damon.

There's also no way to return even if did survive getting there.
Here's your one-way ticket out of the USA for those who make the petty statements about, "I'm leaving if so and so gets elected". (every election someone somewhere says it) They can get all the attention they sooooo crave as everyone will watch them takeoff.

Nonsense. The North Koreans proved it can be done.
quote:
THE STATE News Agency of North Korea has confirmed today that the country has become the first in the world to ever land a man on the sun.
It reported that astronaut Hung Il Gong left for the sun on a specially designed rocket ship at approximately 3am this morning.
Hung, who travelled alone, reached his destination some four hours later, landing his craft on the far side of the lonely star.
“We are very delighted to announce a successful mission to put a man on the sun.” a North Korean central news anchor man said on a live broadcast earlier. “North Korea has beaten every other country in the world to the sun. Hung Il Gong is a hero and deserves a hero’s welcome when he returns home later this evening.”
The specially trained astronaut is expected to return back to earth at 9pm tonight, where he will meet his uncle and supreme leader Kim Jong-un.
It is understood that the 17-year-old ‘space explorer’ travelled at night to avoid being engulfed by the suns rays, and that this genius approach has brought the soviet state to the top of the global space rankings.
While on the sun, Mr. Hung collected sun spot samples to bring back to his supreme leader as a present.
The 18 hour mission is already being called the ‘greatest human achievement of our time’ by the North Korean central news agency.
