Thank God they weren't competing in the javelin.

When I was in school, we weren't allowed to throw the javelin or the hammer. Too dangerous, but I was allowed to run full speed while holding a 20 foot long pole, jam that pole into a comparatively tiny steel box, continue running full speed to force the pole to bend thus hurling myself 15+ feet into the air with my feet pointed to the sky in an attempt to clear another bar before falling in the general direction of an old foam mat...or the ground...or a judge.

That was deemed safe, but because some tard walked across the field during a javelin throw and may or may not have been impaled, I couldn't chuck a spear for school pride.

same thoughts here - I thought they were pretty light, maybe even cardboard

They weigh 1.75 ounces. Mass × acceleration leaves this with a pretty low force... but that doesn't justify what a psychotic act it was.

This sounds like total bullshite. Those batons are made to be VERY LIGHT….. like a hollow tube made of aluminum or carbon fiber. Barely larger or heavier than a paper towel roll tube. It would be almost impossible to cause those kinds of injuries with a relay baton.

completely irrelevant and you know it.

stop making excuses for animal like behavior.

it could be a paper towel cardboard tube, you don’t get to hit a competitor with it. she should be banned from competition for a year and have charges pressed against her.

Is there such a thing as a technical foul in track? It would be warranted here.

These people need to learn emotional intelligence.. And when I say these people, I mean people who run track.

it would be a miracle if she was forced to sit out the rest of the reason. there will be minimal consequences

It's the state final for indoor track. So it's the last race of the season.

Of Indoor but Outdoor starts soon. But she will likely say she stumbled and just swung her arms out to try to catch her balance and inadvertently hit the girl.

Your math ignores the fact that it was held through the strike. As long as she maintains her grip, you have to account for the mass of her hand/arm.

Was it though? It ended up on the ground a half a moment later, indicating it really wasn't all that well held... but it certainly accounts for more than 0 added weight. It's just close to impossible to quantify how much/little.

Is it really expected for someone to apologize for something that was intentional?

Expected? I’d say yes for anyone who has remorse.

Pretty sure that was the entire point.
