What if I found something worth a good bit of money in an auction, bid $68 million on it.
Then, after winning it, sell it for $3 million, and donate the $3 million to Charity?

NOTE: in the movie, as I recall, he buys a one-of-a-kind stamp (the upside-down biplane, I think, worth TONS) and affixes it to a postcard and mails it to the movie antagonist.
I always thought this was, more or less, destroying the value of the stamp, by degradation (handling, licking, post-marking, etc.). So thus a violation of the rules.
But I'm no philatelic.

He didn't destroy the stamp. He devalued it by using it for its intended purpose.

I had an opportunity to fly on a private plane to Florida a few years ago for an athletic event for a few of our kids in our school. Partial owner of said airplane had to back out and offered me to fly in his place....at $$$$$ money, way more than flying commercial, but the convenience was unbeatable: leave when we are done and in Laffy way before midnight.
It wound up being a no-go for the private plane, and for good reason.......relevent to the OP.

By that logic, he could have bought the Apollo 11 Command Module and strapped it on a Falcon Heavy, and wind up with it heading towards Mars... but most would agree he destroyed the historically significant item.
