I know Janky and it's the only reason I'm not fighting her lol. We're LSU people but I'm not about to tell her she "can't" or "shouldn't". She's my adventurous one and says there's more to life than Louisiana (I know but Mississippi???!!!). Anyway, if she hates it good--she has a year to claim TOPS and if she loves it, well, good for her. She got accepted into Honors College and a nice academic merit scholly -- just waiting for April for more scholarship notices hopefully.

You know, slut maybe is a better word? Although they can become that wherever they are. Either way, she'll love it or hate it and go from there.

Crawfish doesn’t have a lot of substance. Just spend the money on a nice cut of meat or fish

I will say that we generally always find them at $2 or below during the prime months at HEB in north Houston
They are never below $2 in San Antonio, and we boil often during season.

Farmers don’t set the prices. Wholesalers manipulate the prices. They benefit the most by doing this .

I like boiled crawfish as much as anyone, but why people pay so much money to eat something that was historically only eaten because it was cheap is beyond me. It makes about as much sense to me as someone paying a fortune for tripe. It's almost like people do it more out of habit than anything else at this point.

anything over $2 a pound live is too much and not worth buying unless you just like wasting money

I don't buy crawfish until after Easter weekend. These frickers like to price gouge you any chance they get and almost always raise the price for Good Friday through Easter Sunday. After that, it comes down.

Unfortunately, all the places I use to go catch my own are now gone to development or pollution.

Yep. At one time I would make all my vegetable/beef soup using oxtails but they are now priced more than boneless chuck roasts, and that is plain ridiculous for what it is.

It seems some in this thread don’t understand supply and demand.

And at anyone who has to pay for live crawfish

Yep. It always cracks me up in these threads. Let's see, it December and cold and there are very few crawfish being caught. Maybe that is why prices are high. Nah, baws think mean people are setting high prices to gouge people.

And then comes Easter weekend when more people boil than any weekend in the year and that includes people in Texas who will pay whatever for crawfish. Nah, we should just expect $.99 a pound that weekend.

That's tautological.

There is practically nothing unique about crawfish that justifies the demand for it, other than habit. The meat has very little flavor of its own. You're basically paying the cost of a 45 day dry aged ribeye to taste mostly crab boil. Both crab and shrimp are vastly superior.

Look, when I get invited to a boil, I go and enjoy myself. But I have never in my life paid to sit down at a restaurant and eat crawfish. Literally never. Not once.

Good for you boss. I rarely pay to eat them at a restaurant either.
I freaking love getting together with friends/family and having a boil. I don't sit down and count the coins to justify how good of a value everything is worth. It's good and it's a good time, so it's worth it.

I also throw $500 worth of cheap asian crap off my mardi gras float too and I'm sure many will say that it's a bad decision.

This thread is literally filled with people bitching about the price of crawfish. I'm not sure how you thought a retort of "it doesn't matter how much they suck, I enjoy boiling them, and I enjoying wasting money in other ways as well" was responsive to my critique
