I know plenty of people that married / are in a serious relationship with someone that comes from less money than their family does.

But I can't even really think of one that does not have pretty much equal education.

is not the same as

doesn't happen in real life

1 example is perfectly sufficient to prove the first statement is not true.

I called a couple of times the next few days and she never called back. I knew the deal and I wasn't going to chase her around. Her fling with the boy toy from across the tracks was done. I felt good knowing that I was the one she went "slumming" with for over half a year and took pride in knowing I wrecked it good and proper like for as long as I could.

Bottom line is that I did not have the pedigree to make the cut. Although I was not entertaining the idea of ever marrying someone who was almost beyond child bearing age and did not want kids. It was just a fun experience and I learned a lot about this particular subject

And it's sad because she's going to have a rough go at it.

Has everything else in the world, but would rather be alone that see through the bullshite of the environment she's in. I don't feel sorry for her, and you win here.

Thanks for the story.

Its very true in my experience. Its pretty rare for someone to marry outside their class.

We have couple friends that are both from ultra rich families (think 000s of millions) and they married each other. The thing is she is probably my wife's hottest friend and he is ugly. And not particularly bright or funny.

Much later in life he found out that people of a higher social class view ocean fishing as a lower class thing to do, as freshwater fishing is what people of a higher social class participate in. By revealing his preference for ocean fishing he outed himself as someone that does not belong to that particular social class.
this seems backwards to me

Pretty sure my property and camp on Toledo Bend costs more than a saltwater boat, and it appreciates instead of depreciating.

I think after they realize that money and not looks have supported their lifestyles, they are afraid of changing their lifestyle, and they gravitate towards those that not just understand the lifestyle they were brought up with, but they understand what type of lifestyle they want to have.

Also, I think it starts in the beginning when you basically grow up with people that have a similar socioeconomic status. So its not like you've been hanging out with lower SES your whole life and then you randomly marry someone who comes from money. Chances are those people have ALWAYS been hanging out with those of similar SES for the most part. Obviously there are exceptions, but I genuinely believe its something groomed over a lifetime.

I wish it wasn't the case to be honest, but I think its hard to identify with people who grew up in a particular way.

For instance, I can't relate to people who are not interested in learning more or pursuing knowledge, or bettering themselves mentally and physically. I don't care if your motivation is money or other things, but I just dont understand what the motivation is for people who dont have the goal of improving themselves.

I can even think of cases where lower SES folks are not accepting of higher SES folks, or see them as outsiders even if they were to "cross lines", which is the reverse of the story posted in this thread on the previous page. Even though he's not exactly low SES.

I don't think its a good thing for people to go out into the world with such a mindset though. Its hard not to, but you shouldnt ever limit yourself.

I've never listened to a cracked podcast before, but I'm listening to the one you mentioned on social classes now. Interesting stuff
