Being close to someone makes you miss of the tell-tale signs of someone abusing pain killers.
Abusing is different than being physically addicted, fyi.
Also, there is no for sure way to tell. Opiates effect everyone differently.
Abusing- droopy eyes and have a hard time staying awake. but some people get tons of energy and are hyper while on opiates. Some are constantly scratching all over body.
And honestly, most of the ones who abuse let you know at some point or another. They generally have issues with self control in other areas of their life too.
Addicted- if they are out of their pain pills, they will have watery eyes, will be yawning constantly, will complain about freezing one minute, and sweating the next, will have chills and goosebumps in the first few days, runny nose, and diarrhea.

There is a chance. But that could be several things.
Benzos will cut your drinking ability in half.
Make you sleep like a baby.
Irritable when you run out (not as bad as if you are taking norco daily)
Unless it's some strong opiates, (heroin, shooting rosy) the hard to wake up thing really isn't an issue with opiate pill poppers.

Itchy nose as stated here. Sweating more than normal, finding the most trivial things interesting, talking quick, spending cash on bs.

What about focusing on these in a negative way?

Whenever I took too many loritabs, I was itching like crazy. Don't know if it was me, or it effects everyone like that. I gotta admit, I was drinking a good bit of beer, too.

they start lying their arse off or its all about "me".
grew up around heavy drinkers so maybe not the best tip of the hand but you can count on some similarities in alcohol and drug users.

How would they be different in the bedroom?

What are the subtle signs?
Subtle signs besides the physical ones that have been mentioned include an increase in truancy or lack of work ethic. If they start to physically let themselves go. They never have money. Completely drops hobbies or interests that they once loved.
Of course these all indicate severe use so they will be well along into their addiction when you see these.
The physical stuff is all iffy at best. Anyone that has been taking opiates for long enough doesn’t get that itchy feeling as much. And the only time you’ll see them feeling like shite is if they are DTing. So if they have a steady supply you will never see the withdrawal symptoms mentioned.
Good luck. But honestly, if you suspect there maybe a problem, then there probably already is because opiate adddicts can hide that shite till they get far enough along that they are stealing to support a habit.

They always have 10/10 pain that never improves and they go to the doctor (and ER) too often for pain complaints

If they're in school, have their grades gone down?
If they are in the workforce, have they had trouble with getting there on time, or not doing the same amount or quality of work as in the past.
Money problems they never had before?

Look at their pill bottle and the fill date and quantity. If it's 2x's daily and was filled 5 days ago with 60 pills and there's 10 left, there's an issue.

If they are addicted and are having withdrawals, it's worse than that depending on how much they are taking. Odds are he'll be locked in his room, he won't just be chilling on the couch
