pawn shop or ebay will probably get you something a lot cheaper.

Marry a poor? A woman who'll be impressed by 1/2 carat...
Seriously, about wiggle room. In the jewelry industry, markup from wholesale to retail is ~300%. And, it's the same markup from manufacturing to wholesale: 300%. I used to work for a company that both manufactured and retailed high end jewelry, so we marked up 600%
There's definitely wiggle room in the system. Whether that will do you any good, doubtful.

And how many experts are gonna scrutinize the ring. My wife has a $20 cz ring that she wears sometimes and other women always compliment it.
That's my point. In everyday life, most everyone never sits with an expert, ever.
So even at a convention of jewelers, basically none could visually point it out as fake without grabbing her hand and holding a magnifying lens up to it.

The good lab stones are pricey, some almost as mush as regular stones. But experts can tell a difference and the equipment needed if unable is usually at every jeweler and not expensive as made to seem in quote
About 40% cheaper and should come down more as circulation increases

Most important: Learn about what you're buying. If you don't know anything about diamonds, you'll be the soccer mom walking into a car dealership repair department.

They will call you with a price... say you know i really like the diamond but the price is out of my range. They will come down 15-20% and then you say i think im gonna pass. Then you call them back and give them your price which is another 10% lower and say if you meet it ill buy it period. I do this shite with window companies and everything... they will always come down to your price.

synthetic lab made diamonds are actually better than natural. And cost about 30% of naturals cost
There's synthetic diamond and there's diamond simulants. Lab/synthetic diamonds are nearly the price of natural ones (up to 30% less according to this chart). When I was shopping, they weren't very far off regular diamond prices.
Simulated diamonds, however, are much, much cheaper. They're also difficult to tell apart, but it's possible even for a non-gemologist to see, namely because you can assume that someone isn't 22 years old and dropping what should be $15K on a ring.
The chart is from a Nexus Diamond Alternative website, so it's clearly pushing you in that direction when you read it, but the whole point is that there are lab-created diamonds and lab-created diamond-like stones. The former isn't much cheaper if at all. The latter is super cheap and very high quality.
And for whatever it's worth, I bought one from the ground because my wife "really like(s) rocks and think(s) it is cool that it came from the ground."
ETA: You can get an utterly beautiful ring that's great quality for very cheap if you get a simulated diamond, and I didn't mean that anyone should be ashamed that it's not a real diamond or anything like that. Nor do I really care if someone's walking around with a 2 Carat stone on their hand, whether it's diamond or not. I was trying to say that the only real way a normal person would know it's fake is by knowing what a stone of that sort of quality should cost and then assuming that most people couldn't afford natural diamond of that quality. And moissanite has somewhat of a unique shine to it that only it really has, I've noticed.

I have a friend thats a jewelry wholesaler. We had one of her suppliers design and construct it. I paid about 30% of the appraised price

The best ones are heirlooms. Ask a family member for a ring.

They’re all pretty much the same.
Anyways, you need to buy loose diamonds and have'em set etc. Its way more cost effective and you can save that 40% if you know folks.

Ebay.
Find some dude who broke off his engagement and is stuck with a ring. This is how I got my wife's wing....paid $3k for an $8k ring. He had the papers. Went and got it appraised for insurance and jeweler said I got a steal.

Go online and get a Moissanite stone. Then find a jeweler that will make a ring for you.

Buy a used one from a friend whose marriage didn't work for couple hundred bucks.

I beg to differ, but I realize it depends on the financial situation. Otherwise sane chicks will go bat shite over rings and what their friends have.
James Allen or Blue Nile are very reputable online outlets and cheaper than other retail. Would start there.
