I'm an out of town landlord. Had a lawn guy for my rental if needed. He used to do good work, was a referral from an old neighbor. He had successfully in the past completed sprinklers, yard work, tree replacement, etc. New tenant said a bush was dead and needed to be pulled/replaced. Reached out to him he said he would handle it and so I venmoed him. Hes been ducking me ever since and won't respond.

Reached out to my old neighbor and apparently this schmuck has done this to several people in the neighborhood.

Money's gone but how can I hit back creatively and effectively?

If your state requires a license for landscaping or property maintenance contractors, file a formal complaint with the state's licensing board. Unlicensed contracting or fraudulent business practices can result in heavy fines or loss of the ability to legally operate.

Thought about the ICE route. All I've got is his name, number, and Venmo.

Honestly in Louisiana not much you can do. No license needed. No insurance needed for lawn care. And the state is very business friendly. To then it's a civil matter and you have to handle in court which isn't worth it.
. Now what would I do? Depends on the amount I was scammed out of.
I would have someone I know set up service with him then either confront him or do some property damage depending on mitigating factors.

$300. Money's gone. Do I want it back, sure. But this is much more about principle. I want to frick this dude's shite up bad. I hate people like that, and more so when my time is wasted. Would love to send his arse back across the border or seriously scare him.

I've thought posing as a new customer. Or calling from a different number and pretending someone mailed a check for him to me on accident and I need him to come pick it up.

I just found a fb post from my old neighborhood and I'm not the only victim. Others are pissed too.

Its in Texas. Similar to what I thought, try to get him to show in person somehow.

I'm not sweating $300. Like I said he's probably done $3k for me successfully before so I thought he was actually a good honest hombre.

But frick that behavior.

Have someone call him pretending to be a wealthy property manager looking for a landscaper to maintain 20 plus properties and that it’ll pay real well. Set up a meet and never show.

Get a list of as many previous victims as you can with contact info and then get in touch with the District attorney's office. They may not be interested in just one victim but if you got a handful of victims that may get them interested.

You venmoed him before he did the work? That's on you.. Eat the loss and find someone else. who will do it before you pay them.

I had something similar happen 10 plus years ago. I paid a guy to take down a tree and grind a stump. I was leaving on vacation, and he was working on the tree, so I went ahead and paid for both jobs. And, this was after he had done good work on a previous job. When I returned from vacation, the stump remained, and he never returned to finish the job.

I'm STILL pissed that I'm out $400, and I can't sue, because the a-hole up and died a few years later.

Yeah I'm just thinking of a way to get at him.

Would love for ice or cops to get involved but I understand that is slim.

So how can I con the con artist. Got his phone and Venmo. He clearly answers if he believes you are unsuspecting.
