Wrong. There are no conspiracies on TV except for the outright lies such as Russian election interference.

You can't become a "conspiracy theorist" by watching cable news.

Incidentally, the term conspiracy theorist was coined by the CIA to cover their tracks and humiliate anyone who questioned their bullshite.

You become a conspiracy theorist now by watching ABC news.

That's not a conspiracy theory. That is propaganda. There is a distinct difference.

I'm not vaxxed or masked btw.

You’re right. This seems the most plausible and all other answers are lies!

That's the problem with brainless teacher's pets like you. Nobody said anything about "any other answers are lies". You project that bullshite, getting all huffy when someone just wants to keep all options options open. Do you honestly think your government hasn't done this type of stuff before?

You are highly unlikely to talk them out of these beliefs so just talk to them about things that are more personal and immediate and avoid current events and politics.

Yes, agree. It's the shared "touching grass" sort of offline experiences that allow to connect with people who are plugged into trusting sketchy sources.

what’s wild to me is how addicted my in laws and parents are to their phones. Cell phones weren’t really a thing until I was a teenager and even then we didn’t use it to browse the internet, but i can’t imagine them letting me stare at it for 8 hours a day like they do.

It baffles me how the term "conspiracy theorist" is still used as a diss despite 80% of the "conspiracies" being proven.

Yep, this has been my strategy, but you never know when some casual comment will derail the conversation. Agree with another comment that conspiracy theories are similar to fan fiction, that makes a lot of sense. Seems futile to push back.

One of my parents friends just posted a fairly long screed about how she doesn't plan to kill her self, she's not on drugs and that she loves her life and her relationship with her husband is amazing and he would never clean his gun while pointing it at her etc etc etc.

Basically writing a note that if she was to die it was because "they" took her out and it wasn't an accident.

Does she have any connections to the Clinton family?

One up their theories. They don't believe in the moon landing, you don't believe in the moon. They believe in chem trails, you believe the government controls all weather. Etcetera

How to deal with conspiracy theory parents

Well, the first thing you could do is go back over the last 5 years and compare how many things started out as a nut job conspiracy that ended up truthful. Of course, once you do that you may end up being one of those crazy conspiracy parents instead...

Be careful.
