Curiously there was never a trial. And the tampering case has never been solved. It was never proven Lewis did any of the Chicago poisonings.
Meanwhile,
“ The exact terms, including dollar amounts of the settlement, were not released and will be sealed by a court order that Cook County Circuit Court Judge Warren Wolfson is expected to issue Wednesday, according to attorneys Leonard Ring and Philip Corboy, who represented the plaintiffs.
Corboy did say, however, that compensation will include a provision for the college educations of the eight children whose parents died in the poisonings.
Jeffrey Leebaw, a spokesman for Johnson & Johnson, said the company is pleased with the settlement.”
You might say J&J came out of this event smelling like a rose since when you Google it you get mostly article upon article of how “Crisis Management Experts’ J&J Handled the Tylenol Case” it’s a complete 180 from the material at hand, deflecting you to how “Heroic J&J” was in wasting no time to save lives in “Solving the Crisis”
Today Tylenol is a trusted brand.

I was born a few years after this all went down, but, I remember people still bringing it up from time to time.
Speaking of paranoia, does anyone remember the "HIV needles under gas handles" thing from the early 90s? I still think about that shite sometimes when I pump my own gas, even though I know it was just an urban legend.

Yep, sure do and we didn't have social media like we do now.

In the 70's, it was razor blades in Halloween candy.

I remember that as well.
I wonder what the actual percentage was of that actually happening?

Yep. I remember hospitals would x-ray your candy for free on Halloween.

Imagine what damage a psycho who worked in a manufacturing facility of some type of every day product with something like 1 oz of fentanyl.
You could kill a lot of people and probably get away with it. They’d just assume drug overdose due to addiction

Pretty scary scenario there.

1982 was right before the massive tort industry kicked into gear. I wonder how J&J would’ve reacted had this occurred 10, 20, or 30 years later, when attorneys held greater sway following an incident.
It would be interesting to see how their actions in managing the crisis - still considered the standard for crisis management - be considered in terms of modern legal exposure. Would they still act the same or become more defensive.

I was 3 when this happened so now I don't remember it but I have watched a few short films on it. I am shocked this doesn't happen even today. There are ways you could still do something similar.
I've always said we're lucky terrorists think so big. Poison a couple of buffets/grocery store produce in major cities, take credit, boom everyone freaking out and we grind to a standstill.

pretty sure this is what cause some of the safety seals we see these days.
ETA:The 1982 incident inspired the pharmaceutical, food, and consumer product industries to develop tamper-resistant packaging, such as induction seals and improved quality control methods. Moreover, product tampering was made a federal crime.[34] The new laws resulted in Stella Nickell's conviction in the Excedrin tampering case, for which she was sentenced to 90 years in prison.[25]

IIRC it was the reason we have them. Weird when you think about it but we also drove cars that didn't have seatbelts at all in them.
