I've been in the oil & gas industry for 20ish years, mostly with same company. While pre-employment always seemed standard in the industry, randoms for office personnel wasn't a thing at all until a couple of years ago. Apparently a few of our customers began requiring that we test office personnel also. We basically do the minimum requirements (which are not minimum at all) to be allowed to continue working for our customers.

My only issue with drug testing is that pot stays in your piss for 2weeks-3months (depending on how much you smoke and your body fat percentage

One or two joints a month will pass out of your system a lot quicker than that or maybe never show up at all. That 30 day estimate is based on a daily or at least near daily smoker.

Past two companies (IT Consulting) did not test at all, unless the client required the consultants on-site at their places of business to have one.

Current company, only customer-facing roles, or folks who drive company rides.

Still working on what to do with customer facing roles in states where it is legal, but I'm quite sure those who drive will always have to be in the "maybe" pool.

I figure if I manager to hurt myself typing an excel formula or getting a water, I’d be able to hide it and deal with it outside of work

I sit at a desk most of the day too but I did have a coworker that fell on some slippery steps outside and hurt his back and had to take a drug test. I agree that it's pretty unlikely and probably wouldn't care as much if I didn't have a family and provide 65+% of our family income.

My company only drug tests if they have reason to believe that you're working under the influence. Basically don't work high and you're good.

Every job I have been at was a “with cause” testing policy. As long as you didn’t do something fricked up at work they didn’t want to know

All depends who you are.
One guy failed a piss test, was fired and rehired. This person was in a hunting club with the boss.
Others not so high on the totem pole not so lucky.

Pre-Employment, post accident and reasonable suspicion.

I hope the company has the same drug testing policy for everyone. From the CEO down to the grunt workers. If not, and something happens, the court gonna slam them for discrimination.

When i was hired we had to take a drug test - which i did, no biggie. 6 months later, they randomly select me again. I had smoked that weekend with some friends. The GM walked in my office, handed me and a few others in sales the random test request and I liked to shite. I had no ideation was an quarterly random. Everyone else left to go take the rest - I told him I couldn’t do it and handed him the paper back. He asked, how much time do you need....3 weeks.
Thank God he is an awesome guy.
No problem.

I think our health insurance provider selects fandoms and all employees throughout our 44 offices are eligible. They select the names and send it to Corporate and they immediately realize them to each General Manager. If we are busy,’the GM will sit in them for a few days before passing them out. Our GM and I, along with a few others were picked last time.

It is funny that the two professional industries that have the reputation for not drug testing are public accounting firms and law firms

we test once at hire and never again
the only reason we do it all is to stay compliant with the various industry vetting requirements and insurances we need.

BTW I’m the boss and I smoke all the time

Mine won't send you unless there is a reason

2 things everybody should know:

1. Synthetic urine retails for between $25 - $60 ($60 get you a harness)

2. They CANNOT watch you pee unless the test is court ordered

I lied, 3 things, they MIGHT check your boots...

That's all I've got...

We had a guy hire in as crane operator and he pissed for pre-employment and passed. They sent him to the jobsite and he worked the rest of the day.

The next day safety comes in with a random and he gets popped for coke and pills in his system. He was a cool dude. He shook hands with me and said that he blew out the night before with an escort.
