How often is the fat kid held to the standard of the other kids? The old , Your older sibling was better at that than you. Why can't you just do it like them? I bet you got a depression issue building here. Take him out and talk with him and find out what happened when he quit hitting dingers.

Okay boomer.
I played video games a shite ton through my teenage years and was never overweight until my mid 20’s early 30’s (we’re talking about 20 lbs, nothing crazy), which was easy to lose when I decided to lose it.
Alcohol is worse for your health than video games, “greygoose”
Epic response, Epic!
The OP clearly stated that the kid's only physical activity is picking up a game controller. I know your feeble mind may have a hard time with this complex reasoning, but do you think sitting on you arse all the time is a great way gain or lose weight?
BTW, I'm glad you turned out to be so Epic.

I think it doesn’t fricking matter as long as you aren’t eating like total shite. Weight loss/gain is 90% diet. I wouldn’t expect a dumbass boomer to understand that though.

Love them, encourage them. Whatever you do......don't shame them.

As an uncle to a 24 yo big boy tread very lightly. It was obvious for years he was going to get to this point and it’s never been comfortable to discuss. It must come from within there’s very little anyone can actually do .

Another Epic response! You are on fire!
At this rate, your doctor may not make you wear that helmet 100% of the time.
Weight gain/loss is very simple. If your fat arse requires 2500 calories/day to maintain your current weight, increasing or decreasing your caloric intake will affect your weight. If you add exercise, your body will require more calories to maintain your current weight. Eat the same amount of calories, add exercise, you lose weight. In simpler terms, get off the couch and move, Genius.
Keep up these Epic posts! Very insightful.

Kids have different methods of motivation. Shaming might lead to change where love and encouragement only reaffirms the unhealthy situation.

The United States Military has a history of motivating people when they begin their time in the service. I don't think a DI has ever been told "Do not shame your recruits." Wonder why that is?

Honestly calories burned from exercise plays a very small role in fat loss.
You should exercise because you enjoy it and because of the myriad of benefits not pertaining to weight loss - improved cardiovascular function, improved motor skills, improved muscle retention, improved mental health, etc. But exercise should not be treated as a panacea to obesity.
To treat obesity you have to treat the root caus(es). Mindset around food, behavior around food, and lingering issues from the past that may be driving one to eat more.
There are a lot of reasons someone might eat way too much. Primarily, we love in an obesogenic environment. High calories food is everywhere and is cheap, and in tandem with this more and more of our jobs and entertainment are more and more sedentary. To combat this, people generally have to actually start paying attention to what they eat and how much.

I don't know how much genetics plays into your nephew's situation, but it was a huge part of mine. I am the oldest of 3 kids. My brother and sister were always in great shape. We were all born within 3 years of each other, so we all participated in some of the same sports like swimming and baseball/softball. It was rare that any of us were inside during our free time. I was still really fat while my brother and sister were fit. All of that changed when I got to high school. From the start of freshman year to the end of my junior year I grew 16 inches and put on another 100 pounds to fill out to 6'4" 275 lbs. I was never cut like like my brother and sister though, I love cheeseburgers. My brother and sister never had growth spurts like that though. My dad always told me it would happen since it happened to him. Just my two cents

Find a woman to let you baste her beaver and have your own kid.

The worst thing you can do is to lose your shite over their eating habits or berate them in front of others. That pushes them to eating in secret. And once they’re out of high school and your gaze they’ll eat everything in sight.
Mix in responsible eating habits with positive reinforcement. And be prepared for the kid to get better but to remain chubby. Some people really are built to be heavier than their siblings.

Update- took jug butt and his siblings out on the boat/tubing yesterday afternoon. I think I have him talked into going out for Jr. High football, assuming they have a season. Also talked to my brother and he agrees it need to happen. Big boy knocked out 2 cheese burgers and 3/4 gallon of blue bell but at least he stayed out with everybody playing corn hole and whatnot and not staring at his phone. Making progress
