re: How old were you when you finally paid off your house (i.e., owned it free and clear)?

First one? 38. Got divorced at 42 and had to somewhat start over. My current house will be paid-off 11 years from the time of purchase.

Not longer than 26 years from now, so 68. Hopefully before that, but it’s 3.3% so I’m not in a huge hurry.
I don’t see myself refinancing out of that rate though

33 or 34, I don’t remember exactly. I’m on my 3rd since. Really hate payments so I’ve not had mortgages till this last one. Bought it before I sold my last. Sitting on the cash till after the inauguration to see how things go.

Depending on where you are in the equation, paying it off early isn't always good.
You can get to a point where the payoff is equal to exactly what you owe, so why do an early payoff?
IYKYK.

This is gonna sound like Dave Ramsey but having no debt is best. Paid the 1st at age 38 and the 2nd at age 47. It allows me great financial flexibility. I paid my hurricane Ida damages up front and didn't have to wait for the insurance to piece meal payments. Piece of mind trumps debating interest lost or gained.

If you finance a house for 30 years in your 20s and you pay the note and the next month's principal every month, you'll pay it off in 19 years and you won't pay any interest at all in the last 6+years of the loan.
Nothing wrong w/ Dave Ramsey, I'm a big fan of 0 debt.

With my 40th birthday approaching, I called and got the payoff amount. Mailed a check for that amount. Best birthday present I ever got. Been debt free ever since.

Well we think alike. I just paid a lot more monthly without sacrificing a normal life lol. I'm a numbers nut because of.my upbringing.
