Thought he was there so the pilot can nap and or bang a stewardess?

Heads up, snot nose.

If there is ever a time you want to see gray hair. It's when the airline captain boards the aircraft.

Captain Al Haynes

Captain Robert "Bob" Schornstheimer

Captain Chelsey "Sully" Sullenberger

I won't lie, I do prefer a touch of grey on my pilots.

Gimli Glider

Bob Pearson and Maurice Quental did a nice job with this even if they screwed up a little. Gd metric system and those continental types.

Pretty much never.

In a crew concept, it’s basically a two person team. One always looking out for the other and confirming that things are being done correctly. Check lists are always run to assure nothing is forgotten.

There are occasional minor things that happen that don’t put the aircraft at risk, just minor screw ups. Bugging the wrong heading or altitude. I had a captain recently that after we were given a clearance direct to a waypoint, he selected the waypoint and activated it, but forgot to switch the autopilot from heading mode to nav mode. It took me about a minute to realize it after I noticed the course needle deflection and alerted him. No big deal, but that’s why two heads are better than one.

That’s absurd.

Next you’re going to try to convince us that nurses keep doctors from killing people.

Now that does happen.

I am of the opinion that nurses save a lot more lives than doctors...A LOT MORE! Have somebody in a hospital fighting for their life for a month or two and you are there almost 24/7. You'll see exactly what I mean.

I would rather have one good nurse as three doctors.

If the captain becomes incapacitated, who takes over?

whoever's left?

ETA: we've had a few Captain's deaths in flight, one when the guy was flying a DC-10 and died in the landing flare, and he was flying

Look at the Tenerife Disaster. KLM chief pilot paid no attention to the co-pilot. This was about the time there was a culture change in the cockpit.

that and a couple of UAL DC-8 crashes where the Captain ignored everyone for the rest of his life

I always thought they were there to help with preflight checklists, give the pilot the chance to relieve himself, and most importantly get flight hours... essentially a paid intern. It's amazing to watch Airline Disasters and how something really minor can end up in disaster.

I do remember episode where the wreck brought about an international standard in the cockpit. Hard to believe some of those Asian airlines put co-pilots in there who were either too scared to point out mistakes by the older pilot or where they did and the pilot basically told then to piss off.

nope, most of our new hires are incredibly experienced, the only lapse in quality comes from the flow through agreement, co-pilots are part of the team, they have an important role and all are rated in the aircraft

tried to leave at 55, before I could get out of the door they asked me to stay and start working in interviewing/training/checking, irony is with my seniority I was working about 9-11 days/month, now I'm working about 17, but it's cool. I'm helping to preserve the legacy

The first issue mentioned in the last couple flying accidents was spatial disorientation right?

Who mentioned it? The NTSB or all the experts here who are experts cause they played “Flight Simulator” on their X box?
I didn’t think anything had been released based on facts. Just conjecture and WAGs.
