I'm with you there, throw in a sand filter and it's pretty easy. I test it myself every week, backwash the filter, refill the chlorine tablets, adjust the pH, empty the skimmers, something I do for about 20 minutes once a week. No big deal, even my wife can do it.

i think this depends on what is around your pool. i have thousands of trees, literally..my property is mostly woods..and probably 50 that overhang the pool area enough that the wind is constantly blowing debris into the pool.

if i don't give it some love every night it will get out of control almost instantly.

Just redid ours for 11k but we’re in south Florida where there is a ton of competition. It’s also saltwater so it’s sinificantly easier to maintain and we never drain them down here.

Go ahead and plan to fly all your friends and family in to help dedicate it.

You know that Christmas Bonus is coming. It’s never not come. You can go ahead and write a check for the deposit.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DON'T DO IT!! USE THAT $40K TO JOIN A COUNTRY CLUB WITH A POOL

My wife wanted one several years back. I said screw that. We joined a swim club and pay $70/month. They have a bar and grill or we can grill our own stuff.

The thing keeping me from getting a pool is snakes. I live in a fairly wooded area and everything I read says it's impossible to keep them out.

Thanks. We actually are looking at buying a kit. Her friend and her husband did the kit on a really nice in ground pool and spent only around 15-20k

I would just buy a house with a pool - let the current homeowner deal with the money etc

That's what we did. It's really not bad to maintain it.

I just started taking care of our pool myself and now know waaaaaay too much about water chemistry. I like the control though. Once I got the CYA under control it was gravy. I'm a big fan of the bleach/baking soda/borax maintenance routine. It's so simple and cheap. The only thing that gets a little wonky is when we get those 5-7 day runs where it rains hard every afternoon. You really have to pay attention to the chlorine level or you'll wake up with a greenish pool overnight.

I don’t see how they are that much work. Growing up my parents had one that was only open seasonally and we maintained it ourselves.
The one I have is open all year and I pay someone $100 month to maintain. I don’t buy chemicals or vacuum it. I may skim it once a month. Aside from topping the water off I don’t do anything.
That being said the pool is almost 30 years old and I am going to have to replace the gunite/tiling soon. If that lasts another 30 that means I’ve done very little.

With landscaping, we spent about $73k 8 years ago. Worth it to us, as we use it for swimming laps most mornings. Plus, it makes a scenic spot to grill.

it is

I have mastered the art of flipping the skimmer cover off with my pinkie.

Cover goes one way, cad goes the other then I take a peek from 5 feet away before sticking my entire arm in there.

I never get snakes in the pool though I have them in the yard. Lots of frogs, iguanas, and raccoons. The coons get out on their own at least. The iguanas I have to fish out.
