Anyone ever file for a patent? How much am I looking at to have an invention patented?

Also, any recommendations on a good patent attorney would be appreciated. I spoke to a couple on the phone and they were all over the place.

I believe you can file a provisional patent pretty easily. Relatively cheap.
And get protection for like a year.

Then if it's going to be worth it file a traditional patent and get long term protection.
But, it'll cost a lot more.

Many thousands, possibly hundreds of thousands based on criteria.

George Foreman knocked out the fat and knocked out the cost of filing for a patent.

As is the answer with most things...it depends.

Getting a patent can be rather simple, but getting one done the right way so that you (the patent holder) can defend it is a whole other issue. The patent is worthless if you cannot defend it.

Did you Google to see if your idea had already been invented?

If so, Google probably stole your idea.

You could try Jones Walker if you are in the BR area. :)

I'm a patent lawyer. All in costs on a simple patent range from 10-20k. It's generally true that you get what you pay for.

I tell everyone with an idea they want to patent that getting the patent is the easy part. Starting a business around it is much more difficult.

Also, if you want to be cynical about it, a patent is just a lottery ticket to litigation. That's not exactly true, but it's not exactly false either.
