I know that my frat brothers and me did some things that could have easily gotten us arrested under normal circumstances, and that was in the late '80's. I can only imagine how things are now. Do you think that they're given specific instructions on things to just look the other way on?

Pretty much anything short of a felony.

Hard to control a large drunk crowd with a police force 1/3 the size of what the city requires on a normal basis.

I rarely see any NOPD around Bourbon during Mardi Gras, it’s all troopers. And they pretty much leave you alone.

NOPD is one thing, most will give you a break as long as you're not a total dumb arse. The State Police, in the quarter and along the parade are a different thing.

How to get arrested at Mardi Gras

This is the opposite of your question but the minor crimes not on this list are basically ok as long as you don’t do it like right in front of a cop to mess with them

At every MG I've attended, I got the impression that they were there by and large for SAFETY. Keep things safe and for the most part you're fine.

Don't be an a-hole and you should be fine. They're not there for a debate. If NOPD or LSP tells you to do, or not do, something, your best bet is to say "Yes, sir." and do as they say.

Also you can slap they're horse on the arse to let them know you understand. Sometimes it's loud and they can't hear you so the preferred method is by giving a light slap of the horse arse.

I wouldn’t recommend it.

Although I do love how I offended you so much that I’m still on your mind weeks later

I once saw an NOPD officer reach into the driver side window (was rolled down) of a car idleing behind a parade on St. Charles. Cop took a beer can out of the driver’s hand, shook his head, and let him keep idleing.

Don't touch the horse.

One of my favorite Mardi Gras police action moments occurred in the mid/late '90's. We were on a balcony on a corner of Bourbon St., possibly St Peter St. There was a police/EMS area barricaded off on the side street.

There was an altercation on The Bourbon St side of the balcony. We couldn't see exactly what was happening, but two mounted cops rode into the crowd. What we did see was some idiot throw a bigass beer at one of the cops and then shove the horse's neck with both hands. In about two seconds, they had the guy pinched between the two horses. Each cop had one of the guy's arms, and they 180'ed and headed back to the barricaded area on the side street.

This was during the heyday of "Cops", so we started singing the Bad boy, bad boy, whatcha gonna do song. The mounted cops stop in front of the entrance and six or eight cops from the cage are talking to them, presumably about what occurred. When they moved the horses to allow the cops on the ground to handcuff the guy, he decided he wasn't through fighting. He must have been the stupidest bastard on the planet. He gave one halfhearted swing and the cops were all over him. It was like a cartoon. All you could see from above wear police elbows pumping in and out and an occasional kick. He was handcuffed and immobile in about 20 seconds. The cops stood in a circle around him and let EMS tend to him. When they loaded him on a gurney to bring him to Charity, he had a bandage around his head with a good sized blood spot in the center of his forehead. One of my friends said, "Well that explains why he tried to take on ten cops ... he's a kamikaze pilot."

The best part was when "Cops: Mardi Gras" was broadcast a week or two later, they had part of the incident on the show and you could hear us singing Bad Boy in the background.

If there is 1 thing NOPD is good at (in fact, the gold standard), it’s crowd control

This is pretty accurate. The barricades is a good add on.

I went to a French quarter krewe party a couple years ago and there were about 10 NOPD spread around from the door to the back of the house. There was an outdoor smoking area and most of the people there were smoking weed. No problem with the police right there. Made me feel old.
