Untouchable savings in 401k and retirement? Plenty

Emergency savings immediately available in case I get laid off? We’re fricked, could maybe pay the mortgage for 4 months without drawing upon the untouchables

Colorado is a high living state, mortgage payment is a bitch

6 months for rainy day.

Knock on wood. Never needed it.

So, my experience and advice…get 3 months in money market or similar and another 3months invested VTSAX, for example.

Let those little investment soldiers fight for you while you don’t need a new roof.

I didn’t feel comfortable until I had 5x my base salary in relatively liquid holdings. I keep 2x base salary in cash at all times. I’ve felt like I was about to be fired at least weekly for nearly a decade.

1st thing I did when I bought my house in Spring was rip out all the toilets and put in elongated bowls chair height toilets.

Did want to be using a used toilet with the small arse bowl.

You do whatever you need for your own peace of mind, but that is a substantial amount of money that has missed out on potential growth.

Didn’t notice traditional at first, but I can contribute to a traditional Roth if I want.

I’ve actually been thinking about it. My taxable retirement savings far outweighs my Roth. It’s probably fine, but it’d be nice to have some tax free income in retirement.

Nah. Lot of it has pulled 4-5% sitting in a ETF tied to the treasury. Nominal price fluctuations and monthly dividend. Can liquidate it anytime. I like not having any concerns about cash flow, I always have cash to push into downturns like Covid and this April, and I have the vast majority of our net worth deployed.

Granted, my expenses are now minimal, but I have 1 year's worth of savings for my emergency fund. I'm fine with it not making any money for me.

Even 4% or so in HYSA? Seems like free money and no risk to me.

$10,000 Venmo, $80,000 checking, $1.1 million in HYCD accounts. Mature early February 2026.

I stay that liquid to help my niece and the few friends I have. I don’t invest because I don’t need the stress. Come February I have a decision to make. I’m making $30,000/yr SS and another $40,000+ interest.
