Not true. I’ve seen kids with great upbringings turn out horrible and seen kids from broken homes turn out to be millionaires. A bad upbringing is a convenient excuse but it’s not your destiny. Your choices determine how far you can go in life.

I learned self-reliance.

100%. You didn’t form your own beliefs and opinions. They were largely conditioned into you by your parents, peers, school, religion. Although you’re ego will lie to you and tell you that you came to those conclusions on your own. You are the sum of your conditioned mental and emotional experiences.

Some characteristics are just intrinsic to the person you are. However, the vast majority our personality is experience based. I would say 60 - 70% would be based on experiences.

In the end, it’s the innate characteristics (pessimism, tenacity, victimhood, courageous, etc) that form your outlook.

100% childhood. Why? I was taught to love reading, which shaped the rest of my life. Being a military brat was 2nd, learning the values of other cultures, the value of the “low man on the totem pole,” etc. you may not think some 18 year old in supply is below you, but ain’t shite happening without the nameless and faceless masses of dedicated individuals.

You’re missing the point. In both of your examples, their childhood helped mold them. Bad experiences can lead to good outcomes as easily as a nice upbringing can lead to bad outcomes.
