My answer would be whatever amount to cover your monthly expenses. The rest should be invested or in an emergency fund

Good shite on your 401k riseup

Idk what mine is between Roth and 401k but it's around that amount as well. Maybe 50-60k. I'm 29 and almost 30, though.

i guess i'd say 5-25k depending on when they started saving. some people have more liquid funds. depends on the person and how they handle their finances. my parents work in finance so their knowledge has helped and hurt. i don't like the uncertainty of financial security.

30 now. Savings 20k on the dot. When I go over that it gets invested 2-5k at a time. Bought a home last year and two years ago paid cash for my car new off the lot (Equinox, no baller)

The wife on the other hand might have tree fiddy because she is incapable of not spending money.

I got married at 30. And probably kept a couple grand in the bank at the time. I spent it just about as fast as I made it.

That's legit, you're right.

Slightly off topic, but when a plan has an automatic contribution, I wonder how much of that is essentially taken out of what they would otherwise pay you? Depending on what you did with it, getting 6% extra pay could be better than getting a 6% automatic contribution.

It used to be 75% up to 4.5% plus a pension, but they killed the pension and just upped theb401k contribution.

Which shows how expensive a pension has become.

Niiiice

I'm sitting around 3k myself. Wish I had jumped in sooner. Of course that 3k is after I cashed out my initial investment so it's all gravy.

70% of Americans don't have $1000 of expendable cash, in case of an emergency ( Source), so if you have $2000 you're doing okay.

That's nice to hear. I've got $4000 worth of cash to spend if I need to but zero retirement for me. Wife is a teacher and is vested in our state retirement system.

Still trying to get my shite together and figure out what I can be when I grow up.
