How much electricity could a gym generate?

I was at the gym today and thought of how much weight (mass) was being moved (velocity). As an example, let’s say you bench press 135 lbs. you do 3 sets of 10. Between your starting position and full extension is about 2 feet. So, after 3 sets you’ve moved over 3000 lbs 2 feet. Now imagine adding all the weight lifted/pressed/moved in a day by all the people working out. They are spending money to exert energy. Could it be possible to harness that energy somehow and put it back in the grid? Could this be economically feasible?

They should just hook all the treadmills and bikes up to a generator and run the building.

Except treadmills require power. You don’t move the belt with your feet like you do on a bike

I workout at Foxy’s so.....I don’t think all the old guys stinking up the steam room generate any energy.

they could easily generate enough power to cover everything they need to power inside the building

From google. An LED bulb with the same light output would last ~2.5x as long.
You would need someone much better at physics than I am to convert the energy used in weightlifting into the equivalent cycling energy. Current is created by moving an inductor (coiled up wire) through a magnetic field, so cycling is the perfect exercise to convert physical activity into electricity. If you wanted to efficiently convert weightlifting into electricity, you'd need to attach the bar to wheels that spin.

Pushing 200 watts on a bike for 30 minutes doesn't exactly take Lance Armstrong abilities, but it isn't exactly a leisure ride. With efficiency losses, you might power a few light bulbs.

If you equated to an effort that you could continuously produce throughout most of the work day it would go down to about 50 watts
At least that's according to an old professor I had at LSU that tought power in EE

If each typical rider is producing 200W:
being generous and saying that the A/C is using 20A @ 208V (this would be a ~1500sqft gym), that's 4160W, so 20 people riding that are dedicated to the AC (on a ~80degree day). If you're assuming a ~65F day, and a gym filled exclusively with power generating stationary bikes, then yeah, the customers could probably power the televisions, speakers, and lighting of the place assuming the bikes weren't significantly spread out.
