don't know about that, but I saw a sticker on a pump recently that said it was a federal crime to pump less than 4 gallons (or something to that effect).

don't ever remember seeing that on any other pump anywhere in my life.

why would that even be a crime?

It was a proposed regulation several years ago for pumps that only had one hose/handle for both E10 and E15. It was never passed. The point was to prevent a previous E15 purchase from contaminating a subsequent E10 purchase with too much ethanol, which could happen when people filled up a one-gallon container when buying E10.

Years ago, in the 80s, I had a car with a busted fuel gauge. Running out of gas goes hand in hand with having a bad fuel gauge.

Anyway Id always try and keep a gallon jug on hand.

I never got a gallon after paying for a gallon. One time it was about a quart short.

States have a person in their weights and measures departments that test every pump to see down to the .oo1. If it is working or customer getting screwed

It's literally their only job, is to test pumps, by using them and testing if the numbers being pumped are correct

I always leave it with a $*.69. Favorites are always when it's $69.69 to fill up.

My grandpa used to say the were calibrated at half flow but at full flow you got air.
Patience he would say as he pumped in the slowest position. Me? I'm not going to sweat $1 worth of gas.

Most stations have underground tanks and lines. There is very little variation in fuel Temperature and density from morning to evening.

They are calibrated based on volume, regardless of flow rate.

I’m sure there is some fantastically high flow rate where the meter may not work as accurately but it’s well above the typical flow rate.

Look forward to inspecting your flowmeter next month.

I'll make sure to have it cleaned and prepped.

This is something I chose to file in the willfully ignorant part of my brain. If I tried to care about and correct all the things that I think might be wrong in the entire world I'd never sleep and I'd go insane in short order.

I barely pay attention to the price of gas because it pisses me...its illogical but most people have some quirks. That said almost every pump I use runs up about a nickel when you turn it on....before you ever start pumping it. I was told once it was how they were calibrated and that is probably true but they ought not show it LOL...I like sausage biscuits....I don't want to see the sausage being made....

This was a while back on 20/20 a group of Asian gas stations owners realized that the California officials that check the amount of gas in the pumps only used 5 and 10 gallon tanks.

So they rigged their machines to be perfect on 5 and 10 gallons but skimming the customer on other amounts. They were doing it for years, but got caught when one of the officials pulled up on empty and attempted to fill up his car and he put more than 16 gallons in.

edit-
it was at this point they started using different sized tanks and realized how wide spread the problem was
