For a BR specific theme among people of a certain age:

-The day Jody Plauche's father shot the scum criminal in the BR airport while Channel 2 cameras rolled.
-Exxon explosion Christmas Eve 1989. Rumbled like an earthquake .Blew out power all the way to Sherwood Forrest (bonus points if you remember when this was a good neighborhood).
-The LSU Auburn 'quake game.

The Germans really f’ed up. From unarmed security, botched ambush with law enforcement in track suits climbing on the buildings with full media coverage that the terrorists watched on tv, not accepting help from Mossad to participate in the rescue ops, a second botched ambush at the Fürstenfeldbruck air base… it was a total failure.

And certainly not a sports achievement of your favorite team

I know you said this, but my dad has often mentioned the 1980 Miracle on Ice as a “where were you” moment that went beyond the game. The fact that is was tape-delay made for some of the interesting stories from others.

Look at how divisive Covid was, most people can’t even agree about when that whole thing started

My ex and I went to the LSU-South Alabama baseball game. It was our Spring Break. We were going to NO the next day for some touristy stuff. We were sitting at a table at Chimes after the game and suddenly news is breaking that every sporting event is being suspended, cancelled, delayed, etc. We made the decision to come back home to TX instead of going to New Orleans. Panic buying was starting quickly. That whole day felt like the beginning to me.

You have "Hitler death" but not the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima?

I'd say that was more definitive

Also Pearl Harbor

The fall of the Berlin Wall

There really aren't that many though people will list out a number of them. However, very few of those events - though impactful in the moment - are still talked about with awe or reverence.

I think the biggest post-WWII moments that people still talk about and remember exactly where they were are:

-Sputnik
-JFK assassination
-Moon landing
-Nixon's resignation
-Challenger disaster
-9/11 attacks
