How many “where were you” events in American history exist?

My parent’s generation it was JFK. Seeing 9/11 questions today. First one I can remember is the Challenger.

I don’t mean a personal events like birth or death of someone you care about. And certainly not a sports achievement of your favorite team.

Did people ask, where were you when you heard about Pearl Harbor?

You remember where you were when Covid happened? Where was that if I might ask?

Doubt there are any baws here who could tell you this, but I believe so.

These flashbulb memories will be unique to each individual, but collectively, 9/11 is probably the most common for those of us alive today.

Other candidates - and they’re usually tragedies - would be Columbine, OKC Bombing, Waco, and the Boston Marathon Manhunt.

Unfortunately, we’re so fractured as a people that I don’t believe we will have many unifying events like 9/11. Look at how divisive Covid was, most people can’t even agree about when that whole thing started - was it when Rudy Gobert touched the microphones? Was it when DJT tried for a travel ban? Or was it the first time you had to put on a mask to walk into Walmart?

All the real ones will be said, but the OJ chase and Columbine are low key WWY moments.

Buckwheat assassination by John David Stutz is the first one I remember.

I will never forget that night.

I know the point you think you're making. I don't think it's working.

When they declared a pandemic and everything shut down. March 11th. I was in a car driving to Louisiana from Idaho.

Right. There is no “moment” for Covid. Is there a natural disaster that I’m missing?

Hurricane Katrina for those in the Gulf South, but I doubt your average person in Vermont or Oregon remembers.

I was in the Pete Maravich Assembly Center when Nick Lou Saban was introduced to the school wearing a black jacket and a gold mock turtleneck and raised his fist in defiance of the rest of the conference, people in East Lansing and tall people everywhere.

For me it was St. Patrick's Day. We had been hearing rumblings about working from home, and testing our VPN all at the same time one night after work. That was announced the Thursday or Friday before. Monday afternoon on the 16th, they told us to take our laptops and don't come back until we get the all clear. So on March 17th I started working from home for what lasted about 20 months. Of course the only reason I remember the exact date is it was on St. Patrick's Day, but still that memory sticks out at me.

9 / 11 - I was driving to work when I began to hear about random, unconfirmed reports of the first jet on my radio. I was cynical or jaded enough to not believe it until I got to work, got online, and satisfied myself that it was real.

Then I just happened to be in the conference room, with the TV on, when the second jet hit the other tower.
