Grandpa: Never, my mom's dad died when I was 4, my dad's dad started suffering from Alzheimer's when I was 10.
My dad: Twice. When his dad died after suffering from Alzheimers for years and when one of his and my mom's best friends from college died.
I've seen him choke up a couple times, but those are the only times i've seen him cry.

I lost my 20 year old son to cancer this year. My dad was here when we decided to put my son into hospice. My dad knew that was the last time he was ever going to see him alive.
He broke down like I've never seen before

That sounds crazy. I can't imagine getting 30 relatives to vacation together.
I’ve looked forward to it every year since I can remember. My mawmaw and pawpaw would pay for the whole thing and it’s some of the best memories I ever have. They’ve gotten too old to come for the last 5 years or so but I imagine that we will keep doing it until I’m as old as they are.
I’ve only missed it one year in my life and it was because my newborn son was in the ICU.
Thanks for all of your stories. I didn’t intend it to be a depressing thread, but more along the line of remembering the strong men that shaped our lives.

My Dad only once back in July when I had to go tell him my older brother had died from Covid. My Dad is 83 and in a nursing home. I knew it was coming and already made arrangements to go into the home to tell him when and if he passed. I walked into his room and he was sleeping. I woke him up and the first thing he told me was that he was having a dream that they let us into the Hospital to visit with my brother / his son. I then had to tell our Dad that he had passed away. I had never seen my Dad cry and I am tearing up just typing this. Toughest thing I have every done in my life.

Grandpa : never. Dad when his parents and siblings passed. My dad is gone now , he passed in 2018. I cried a little at the funeral but completely lost it when I got home I didn’t know one of my grandsons was in the other room he was 9 at the time. He was upset and I think shocked at seeing me cry. I felt terrible for crying in front of him for some reason. He just kept telling me that he loves me and was sorry. I can tell you younger guys , you think you love your kids… wait till you have grandkids

My dad either. I didn’t cry at my dads funeral when i was 19. We just suck it up and die of heart attacks

My dad just lost his identical twin brother. He is completely broken. He is not taking it well at all but is trying to not show how bad he is hurting. The night his brother passed away we were all together in the hospital room and he cried more than I think he has cried his entire life put together.

My dad , recalling some events he went thru in Vietnam. Never talked much about it, but one night it all came out. Seemed to be the hardest on him was a small village hidden from sight right behind behind Charlie’s line during a fight. Civilian casualties included an infant that he discovered.
He cried as hard for that little one as If it was his own, thirty some odd years later.

How many times have you seen your Dad or Grandpa cry?
Made this question easy for Alabamians because most of their dads are also their grandpas.

3. Two of those were when we had to put down a dog.

Never seen either of my Grandpas cry.
My dad - twice. Once when he got the call that my great-grandfather (my grandfather) had passed away. The other time was when our house flooded in the May 1995 NOLA floods.

Grandfather never.
Father. When I graduated from the eighth grade and received the award for "Most Outstanding Student in the School" He and I were named after my grandfather. My mother said it was the only time she had seen him cry.

Grandfather: never saw him cry he passed when I was 6. I never knew my moms dad as he had passed away before I was born.
My dad: twice once when my brother was diagnosed with testicular cancer when he was 17 (made a full recovery). Second time was when my parents dog passed away last year as they were thick as thieves and he passed away with my dad holding him in their front yard.
I find myself getting choked up at things that before children would have just brushed off, but having kids softens us I guess. I still won’t show it in front of anyone. I shed a few tears when my kids were born but I did it in private once everyone came into the room and I excused my self to go grab something to eat. I ugly cried when I put my Dog down two years ago when it was just her and myself in the room before they came in to administer the drugs. I had to excuse myself the next day when my son lost it that his dog wasn’t coming home and he didn’t have a dog anymore.

Neither of my grandfathers but both passed when I was young.
I saw Pops break down once. For many years, he was on the crash unit at what was then Moisant Airport. He was on duty the night that a training flight crashed into the Airport Hilton across the street. I won't go into details but there was a group of high school girls from Wisconsin staying at the hotel and he found some of them huddled together in a running shower, hoping that it would protect them from the flaming jet fuel that was splashed into their rooms. Suffice to say that it didn't. When he got home and had time to decompress, he broke down for a few minutes, then he buried it inside and never spoke of it again until he passed.
