Thief's don't care if there are cameras. The ones with half a brain conceal their identity with a hoodie and a mask. If they do happen to get caught they receive little if any punishment

Guy that stole my packages waved at the camera. Unless they have their name on their clothes, or you get a license plate number, video from security cameras are pretty useless in finding the perp. The cops love having more videos of unidentifiable males in hoodies wearing shades.

Are you running in a W10 VM or have a computer dedicated just for it?

I am running a dedicated computer for the cameras. It is a Win 10 machine. It is an AMD Ryzen 7 machine with 8 TB of storage. Overkill I know, but I always build machines a little more robust than they need to be.

If you have a wireless camera with a battery or battery back up. How does it record if your wifi network is down due to no power

Literally every digital piece of equipment I own has its own dedicated UPS, except my laser printer. Cut the power and the cameras will still be running, the computer will still be recording, and my entire network will stay up until the batteries in the UPS are depleted. Want to defeat security cameras? It's pretty easy, just wear a mask and a hoodie. In the end there is no perfect, foolproof, system. It's just an additional layer of protection that makes it harder to steal my stuff.

I have 4 outdoor cameras and my whole security system has a ups. Also, if they kill the power the automatic back up genny will start and provide power to the house. The genny is 12 feet in the air and unless they brought a ladder thrives aren’t gonna be able to stop the genny.

If the criminals are caught they don’t get punished. WTF would they go through the trouble of disabling your camera? They probably would post the video on their instagram.

The footage still has a lot of value though.

Evidence that something happened, and that items were stolen/damaged.

If the quality is high enough, there may be identifying marks or clothing.

The police can see where to check for finger/footprints.

Full body motion analytics are becoming a thing, may be used in high severity crimes.

They are cheap and easy to install. No point in NOT having them if you want to monitor your property.

Main residence: Old folks all around me.

No cameras.

Nest Thermostats, I guess I could tell if someone walked past one of them if it was on the ECO setting.

Never any issues.

Other places, alarm service
