How many of you grew up in a home where home cooking was the rule more than the exception?

Growing up, both my parents worked full time careers, and yet food was always cooked every night on the weekdays, and we’d go out to eat or pick something up on Friday or maybe Saturday night, and mom prepping up for the week and cooking on Sunday was a big thing. Both my folks are college educated and made money. We just didn’t do it, mostly because they saw it as a huge waste and the food was far better than eating out. As a result, I think it birthed in us a real love for cooking and food in general, as it did many others.
Today however, it seems as if even those people I know were raised with home cooked meals, raised their kids on fast food, and picking up food from a restaurant much more often than cooking at home. I think a lot has been lost as a result of that, and I find it curious...
Were you raised with more home cooking or eating out?

Me. And I cook every night still. Eating out is expensive.

The only time we ever ate out was on Wednesday after church.

Exactly how I was raised and raised my kids the same way. We all like restaurants now that make things we don't cook at home (souffle, sushi, pad thai, etc) and rarely eat fast food. After coming back from vacations that include a lot of dining out we immediately want roast or some other type of home cooking.

Before my parents got divorced we mostly ate at home but I lived with my dad after they split and he didn't cook other than breakfast and on the grill. We ate out a lot.
I spent a lot of time over at my grandparents though and my maw maw was a gourmet Southern cook and made 3 meals a day.

When a girl could still cook and still would...

My parents both worked and they had self managed rental properties as I got older. They cooked most nights in youth, but in High School, with sports and activities, We were ordering takeout 3x weekly.

My wife is a good cook and probably 9 out of 10 meals we eat are home-cooked.

Still do. I cook when I have my kids 90% of the time. I don’t like eating out I do it enough for work.

We ate Churches chicken after church a lot. Used to go to Dairy Queen and eat after little league games
Going to Pizza Hut was an event. The little Pac-Man games, the jukebox, free refills of rootbeer, hot fresh pizza. Man what the frick happen to Pizza Hut.

Same as you. Cooked during week, occasional take out or even rarer eat out on the weekend. And eating out meant a chain like Applebee's.
Many times, cooking at home would mean frozen food with a canned veggie. But usually, it was an actual cooked meal.
I usually always cook at home as an adult for dinner. My issue is breakfast. I am Ron Swanson-level obsessed with eating out at breakfast.

My maw maw grew up poor and her dad ran off when she was a kid. She was the youngest and her job was to cook for the family starting when she was 11. Woman could cook like no other.
My grandparents had a huge garden, cows and chickens when I was a kid so a lot of what we ate was grown or raised on their land.

Grew up with poorer family but we always cooked. Parents liked to use can vegetables more than I cared for, which I rarely use. But yeah I grew up cooking, I even remember helping making biscuits with my great grandma early in the morning with the metal shifters that you had to spin like a fishing reel. And she made biscuits up until the few days she died in her 90s.
I think that I can cook and a lot of my friends and family seem to agree. Would love to have a restaurant but seems like a lot of work. I do think I got the next big fast food idea but again a lot of work getting it all started. But maybe one day.

We only ever ate out on vacation or occasionally on our birthdays.
The birthday kid got to pick what was for dinner and 9 times out of 10, we'd pick one of Momma's dishes over fast food out.
I, of course, always chose something my brother didn't like and he picked lima beans in retribution, out of spite.

We’d cook occasionally but guaranteed Friday and Saturday night we were going to steakhouses or restaurants .
