We grew up watching Gulf Coast Championship Wrestling on Saturday nights in the late 60’s thru the 70’s. This was the last era of “real” wrestling. Cowboy Bob Kelly was one of the stars.

Lol… haven’t thought about that for years!! Seems like I remember Sputnik Monroe, Yamamoto (?) and seems like there was some black guy but my mom turned the tv off when he was on. Probably if I thought hard about it I would remember a couple more. Was in Memphis in early 60’s.

Lol @ Adrian Street..You don’t need a crystal ball to tell you just what he could do to YOU

Anyone remember the Armstrong’s…Brad Armstrong and Bullet Bob Armstrong who lost a loser leaves town match then always came back masked. The other wrestlers would always try to unmask him to show it was him.

Who were your favorite wrestlers?

the original GLOW wrestling girls (Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling)

it blows my mind why they dont still have this just girl wrestlers only shows anymore

they were pretty and looked feminine, unlike those muscle bound man beast women that you see wrestling now

like Beckie Mullen pictured here on the right

and most of the rest were all just as good looking

This thread brings back some memories from my childhood. I remember watching with my grandfather on Saturday mornings. Highway 71 used to be the only way from Alexandria to Baton Rouge before I-49 was open. One time we were driving through cheneyville or Bunkie and we stopped to grab a snack at a roadside ice cream stand. I immediately recognized that the only other car there was loaded with about 5-6 wrestlers, like Precious Paul Ellering, the Junk Yard Dog and Ernie Ladd.

I remember being just so confused why they riding in the same car and seemingly enjoying their ice cream and they weren’t all fighting one another!

My brothers and I would always watch the Mid-South broadcast from around 1985 to when it became UWF and then folded into the NWA/WCW brand.

I’ll never forget Humongous debuting and basically getting a squash over Duck Murdoch. Like, that moment was branded into my then 9-year old brain. I’d never been so terrified of a wrestler’s debut.

Also remember the Blade Runners brief run before Sting got partnered with Rick Steiner.

Mid-South had such great characters and stories. The nature of the territory made it difficult to build on them long-term but overall, it was perfect entertainment for someone my age then.

Duggan getting the fireball to the eye from Skandor Akbar. The weeks of “updates” from his hospital and recovery. It all felt - dare I say - real, dammit!

- Arn Anderson (tomato can)

- Marty Lundy (build your record up against him)

- Mr. Wrestling 2 (loaded boot from his black bikini and bad mask)

- Butch Reed (power head butt and rolling double fist)

- Guy who played in Stagger Lee costume for the one match where it wasn't a banned JYD (so they could un-mask him)

Hated Yellabelly Robley.

And there was a Corporeal Sumthinerother who was sent in to lose in the tune up matches.
