Sounds like a great question to ask AI.

We've built maybe 2 expansions.

Even that technology is old as hell

Not anywhere near enough. It should be the only power source we are investing in. It’s by far the cleanest and most productive mode of power currently available to humans.

But nothing happened in Pennsylvania 50 years ago so we have to pretend like it’s dangerous.

We built two AP1000s not too long ago. I know of 3 SMRs that are currently in the works

if future prosperity is based on nuclear power, china is going to surely pass us up if we dont get it together. This country has a serious problem with long term planning.

LNG not expensive enough yet?

It's finite power

Large nuke reactors are typically 1 gigawatt. Often times one site will have 3 reactors or so. That means 3 gigawatts per site. How much energy AI will need, I don't know. If you find estimates, you can do the math.

The one issue with nuclear is it isn't capable of scaling in real time to meet changing demands. You will still need "peaker plants" and natural gas is the best at that.

While all this is true I’d imagine the shear capital expenses would ever allow that to happen. Nuclear power has very high capital costs. That as well as the ability to fluctuate based on demand.

The cost of capital is monstrous. It’s the second biggest hurdle you have to overcome after you fight off the local NIMBYs and their lawyers. It’s also directly reflected in the high $/W for nuclear power. We certainly need more nuclear, but it’s not something you want to be too heavily reliant on. The o&m is also bananas expensive.

At one time , TVA had plans for 17 reactors across several states. Currently, only 7 are online at 3 separate sites.
