In a group chat fight, guy said lawyers in SWLA are trashy, ambulance chasers. Other guy says they have more lawyers pulling in 7 figures than Orthopedic surgeons around here. Guy in medical field gets triggered which leads to an ongoing 2 week group chat brouhaha.

Was wondering what you guys would say. Feel free to drop names.

Looking at this website as a 3rd party to end it.

Good lord. Not worth the debt to take on to become a lawyer.

A lot of lawyers have salaries like yo-yo’s. Depends on what walks in the door. I know a small town lawyer had a slip and fall at Walmart where they clearly didn’t follow their own rules for spills. Made bank. Of course, the client had several back surgeries to get through. I wonder if he would say it was worth it

I always wanted to know how much a lawyer at Morris Bart or Gordon McKernan in Lake Charles would make.

If a single lawyer solely took all the cases at one of these firms just in the Lake Charles area would they make 7 figures? Meaning they take home 33% of each settlement.

Feel like you'd get a shitton of 15K policy limits and a couple 18 wheeler accidents and that might do it.

This could be your classic lawyer v. tradesman thunder dome. Neither is making that milly plying their trade…but the business owner that employs either might.

As for the $1.4 million, maybe it depends how you define Biglaw.

AFAIK there is no hard definition of Biglaw, I personally consider it to be the AM100 firms but there are other definitions. The 1.4m PPEP comes from AM100 but keep in mind it is an average and shops like Craveth, Kirkland, Wachtell, and Davis Polk have PPEPs well over $5 million. Further, the PPEP will include young equity partners as well as guys in their mid to late fifties and older that have 25+ years as a partner.

I still say Biglaw is the most straightforward way to making $1 million+ a year. It isn't "easy" and lots of pitfalls along the way but the percentages are as good or better than any other field if you are willing to work like a dog (or be really good at looking like it) out of the gate. It helps knowing someone too. My grandmother literally got me my job. =True story: the firm actually called me, woke me up on a Tuesday morning and I had no idea why they were calling because I hadn't applied for a job with them.

Gordon the firm is probably taking 33-40% as the fee and the individual lawyer is making 15-25% of that number as their individual compensation.

There are high level guys who are actual litigation attorneys at Gordon who can negotiate their take home up to 33-50 percent of that fee.

There’s also a hierarchy that some guys get the first pick of cases that come in in a geographic area.

There are lieutenants at Gordon who regularly clear $1-3 million a year. Sometimes even more.

Making a lot of money doesn't mean you aren't a trashy piece of shite. Ambulance chasers are trashy pieces of shite.

I’ve got a good intelligence on that. I’ll keep that off a public message board

It’s less than the collective C-Suite at your well-known insurance companies, though.

ETA: doctor's definitely make more on average imo. They can make 5 sometimes 6 figures on a single surgery.

WTF procedures are those? My wife, a CT surgeon, damn near laughed herself silly when I repeated that. She noted total physician related billing for something like a heart transplant may break 6 figures but the amount any single physician gets in their pocket is FAR less than that.

My bill for back surgery was over 100,000.

I don't remember how it all broke down.
