One of my best friends is like this. Probably the smartest guy I knew growing up, and he's had "one year left" now for 25 years. Not kidding.
He says he's "in school" here and there... but doesn't elaborate.
Unfortunately, he's had his focus elsewhere in life. Chemistry, if you catch my drift.

I'll one up you - I know a guy (27 year old) who's been one class away from graduating with a physics degree for about 3 years now.

These are the ones that perplex me the most. Like dude... it's ONE CLASS. Just sack up and finish it.

Was me for 17 years; but in 1983-1984, I finished my one-year-left BA and then in 1987 got my MA. So 33 years hence, I have had not only one degree, but also a post-grad degree - and am a dissertation from a doctorate. I quit on that one in the early 1990s and won't do the work. No more $$ and not worth the hassle (in my case).

What field is your pending doctorate in may I ask?

I also see this a bunch on resumes under education
LSU - 1990 to 1994 Finance, Accounting, etc
There's always a 4 year span but if I interview them they don't hold a degree. They're always 6 hours short of finishing.

I know a few. I have an employee who is a semester away from a degree that could change his life and he won't get it. I offered to have it paid through the company but nope. Amazing how peoples give a frick give out.
My dad was in this exact situation but was smart enough to take the owner of the company up on this opportunity.
Finished his last semester, got his degree at 35, and now pretty much runs the company with his salary almost tripled.

Kind of how there are 4 people at least in the American Airlines thread claiming to be 6'3"

aka was in school for 3 years but only has enough hours to classify as a sophomore or freshman.
Kind of what I was thinking what it has to mean. It's a person who dicked around for a few years maybe switching majors too many times or dropping/failing too many classes to actually be working towards a degree in a timely fashion. Then he/she eventually runs out of money or just quits when it seems like he/she isn't ever actually getting anywhere.
At least this is my assumption. I don't actually know anyone closely who is in that situation.
My old roommate in college did end up having to switch to a philosophy major from biology so that he could graduate in 4 years because he didn't plan correctly to what classes were actually required to graduate with a biology degree. That's the closest I know of that situation in detail.

I have a cousin on my white trash side of the family that is actually that close. She was national honor society, honors classes, and everything in high school. Her family was absolute trash. I know the rest of the family was really proud of her accomplishments despite her family. She was majoring in education and had scholarships and everything. She was always kind of crazy and came from that mindset that she needed to be married with kids. She jumped on some trash guy. Started working at a bar and just never did her student teaching. I'm pretty sure that's all she had left. 8-10 years later, I think she's still a bar maid or some shite. So sad. She just couldn't shake the upbringing her family gave her I guess.
Other than that, I don't know too many. One thing that does annoy me is the guys who go to BRCC who are "at LSU.....well I'm at BRCC right now, but I'm going next semester" , then never actually get into LSU and just spend 4 years taking remedial algebra and going to tigerland. But act as if they had an actual college experience.

We had a friend who swore that he was one math class short of getting a degree. He was a nice guy and we offered to take it for him if he had that big of a phobia about taking that class. He'd never take us up on it.

Is that like:
Officer pulling you over: Have you had anything to drink sir?
Driver: Two beers.
