It depends on how long it takes you to complete your dissertation.

Depends on the field, depends on how fast you can get your dissertation approved and complete, and if you can pass the classes. LSU has a 7 year range. After that you're out.

I worked in a grad office at one time. If people were on top their shite it took 3 years. Most took about 4 or 5. Some longer.

Most of of those who finished quick were foreign on student visas.

From people I know, it seems like there are a whole bunch of things that can go wrong, and it makes the process very irregular.

PhD in what?

Gender studies? 5 minutes of real work plus however long indoctrination takes.

Technical studies? 3-5 years depending on lots of variables that could easily stretch it out longer.

It depends. If your Master's is a terminal degree then you can be looking at 3-6+ years depending on how quickly you write and defend your dissertation. If your Master's is a byproduct of the PhD work--you get it after the first year of course work and maybe an oral defense--then your PhD will still be 3-6+ years depending on how quickly you write and defend your dissertation.
