Exactly, Other counties revere their elderly. In the US, we treat them like a burden. It's a damn shame.

My mom's mother moved in with my parents about a year ago. She had been living alone since my grandpa died five years ago. My folks have a small guest house in the back yard. She mostly keeps to herself during the day but comes into the main house to eat dinner with my parents every night. My mom really enjoys having her close and it makes her feel good knowing she's safe.

Not lame at all. Admirable.

I would do anything to have my late mother to be able to live with me.

Many cultures have 3 and sometimes 4 generations under the same roof. Asian and Sicilians do this regularly

Take care of your parents. Unless they were/are genuine assholes

Agreed.

It's going to be pretty interesting for me and my wife fairly soon. Both of our parents are in their 70s now and hers aren't in good shape but they live 6 hrs away in Birmingham. She has one sibling but she won't be able to care for them. She can't take care of herself.

Nothing is lame about taking care of your parents if they need you and you love them.

I added a separate kitchen, bedroom and bathroom so we could take care of my aging mother-in-law.

This is almost my ideal setup that I wish I could do for my mom. The mother-in-law cottage in the backyard for older parents is great for everyone. Closeness for security and to watch out for each other, but not under the same roof driving each other crazy. About the only thing I would prefer more is a smaller house next door that could be rented out until she's ready and then renovated when it's time.

Yes. There's a spare bedroom in my butler's quarters that they can use.

Imo the fact that we dump our elderly parents in a shitty nursing home out of convenience is one of the worst phenomenon of modern society.

Not lame at all... I keep trying to contrive ways to get my parents to move closer to me, but the ultimate goal is to be able to have them live with me.

We need a dog nanny. They're outsmarting us and we need help.

I wouldn’t want to do it but it’s your duty as a child to take care of your parents if the time comes where it is needed

Nursing homes are a special kind of hell. Not lame at all when you’ve got plenty of room.
