How important is it for the father to be present for his child's birth?

It is expected. Pro athletes skip major events to be there for their children's birth. I would submit to you it is not nearly as important as our society makes it out to be. First the kid will not remember it. Second, if you miss a historic opportunity you never get that back. You can see your kids any time.
I am watching the Masters and a golfer was going to miss the Masters if his wife hadn't given birth last week. That may be his only chance to play in much less win at Augusta.
Also our troops have to miss their children being born all the time. A man's job takes precedence on occasion

Danny Willett is on the verge of winning a tournament that he was going to skip if his wife hadn't delivered last week. The baby was due today. Jordan Spieth collapsed to give it to him.

Women in my family refuse to allow a man in the delivery room. Some weird female thing from way back.

It's interesting that it just really became a thing over the past 40 or so years.
That said, I'm glad I was there for mine.

Probably because they don't want their men seeing ripped apart vaginas full of blood, terds, and baby fluids.
I plan on being at the food court

I missed my daughters birth. I was installing halo lights in a customers vehicle when my gf called and said she was having contractions but thought they were false contractions and was gonna go sit in the bath tub to relieve them. 15 mins later, she calls me and says she has had the baby, right there in the tub. O_o
I actually beat the ambulance to the hospital and my shop is an hour away from my house and an hour and a half away from her OBGYN. Out ran 2 sheriff dept cars and swerved past a road block to get there.

I was there in delivery room for my daughters birth. It was amazing. But to each his own.

Plenty of dead beat dads show up on day 1. It's the rest of the days that count.
Being there for delivery is not very important.

You're weak if you tolerate that.
How you gonna cut the cord from out in the hallway?

If you miss this on your own accord, you're a shitty person.

Yea the kid will never know. But I couldn't imagine being such a POS to my wife.

Was there for both my daughters. I think the only acceptable time to miss it is if you are deployed in the military, or if you have an emergency duty to fulfill.
Of course, each to his own.

Your old man probably wishes you were never born, if that tells you much.

I wouldn't miss it either. But emphasis should be in being a real dad. Not just bragging to friends about how you cut the cord.
