I heard a report on the radio this morning about the people "left behind" as oil has recovered in the Permian basin.

One guy interviewed had two jobs (ran a cleaning service and cleaned rooms at a hotel) and yet, according to the report, he was struggling and received a subsidy to afford his 2 bedroom apt because he made under 32k/year.

The report was glowing about all the OT baller oil workers. I know less than zero about the industry, but it seemed to me this guy was trying to make it in the wrong field. How hard is it to get oil industry work that would pay more than this guy is making?

There will always be rich and poor in every single society on the planet. I don't understand why people think this is unique.

It's really at the early stages of recovery, it's not back.

ps - I'm not really surprised that a guy cleaning motel rooms makes only 32k year. Doesnt sound like much of a story tbh.

It also depends on what job they have. Is the worker a welder or a bus driver?

There aren't supposed to be rich and poor in the governmental and economic model they're proposing, and that's the point in all of these propaganda pieces disguised as human interest stories.

Jesus said 2,000 years ago: "The poor ye shall have with you always..."

How is it so hard for liberals to get their heads wrapped around this concept?

I know the guy. There's more to his sad story. Depression led to drug use after getting laid off and his wife left him for another oil baw and his F250 got repoed. Then he sold his boat and yeti cooler for heroin money. Constantly got his arse beat at sonic after only being able to afford the value menu.

Sad story all around

The moment you hear 'living' or 'livable' wage, you know that everything that follows is going to be a huge pile of economically illiterate excrement.

There are no livable or unlivable wages; there are only wages, undertaken by choice.

The pay in the oil industry is pretty good when its booming, but you have to deal with the ups and downs of the market and it seems there's more downs than ups.

I agree with the choice statement.

It actually is possible to calculate a living wage by finding the monthly cost of a residence, necessary utilities, minimal food cost per person, etc.

No. You can determine a cost of living; that has no bearing on the choice to accept a wage that is above, at, or below that-- nor should it ever. If the work isn't worth your while, or there exist no means to reach the cost of living--whether a supplemental income, a second job, or a partner's contributions--- that is a you problem, for accepting the wage.

Don't want it? Don't take it.

Read a report the other day that people in low wage jobs are more likely to be not working in 4 years than advancing. Of course the look at it as structural

It's not. In 4 years if you don't have marketable skills, you're virtually unemployable

Boom gonna boom.

Wages for all services tend to go up in booms, because demand for labor -- any labor -- in the oilfield goes up and wages are high.

(That may be a little different for this boom. There was a large supply of unemployed skill willing to move to West Texas).

It will bust. It is inevitable.
