How hard is getting into sales?

I'm having to totally change careers. 40 years old, no private/corporate experience. Got a buddy that says he can get me a job making 80-100k first year selling commercial ADT alarm systems. Seem legit or am I walking into a trap? It's 100% commission which scares the crap out of me.

Getting into sales is easy.
Getting into a job selling valuable stuff is very difficult without experience/reputation.
Mitch and Murray are hiring, but you have to sell shite land to bad leads.

Randy you're going to need a stipend. It's hard to live on commission. I tried it for two years and it sucks.

Usually helps if you can show a little leg to the buyer. Worked for a lot of the pharmaceutical reps I knew.

I’m in sales and that sounds fricking awful. The barrier to entry is low. The ability to thrive and succeed is another story.

Obviously, start an onlyfans to offset your income for the first year or two. You know like putting your feet in jello, butthole pics, a painting your toenails, finger painting videos.
You will pull through this, i believe in you

A sales job is not for the fiant of heart. Some people are not cut out for it.
Realistically, I would cut your buddies first year numbers in half,

Easy but you have to sell your soul.

Looks to me like most people/companies are trying to cut back on spending, as it seems like we’re in an economic downturn that’s going to be here for a while. That will likely have a negative impact on “sales” overall. Security systems may still remain a fairly good product even in a downturn, though, as people will be willing to pay to protect what they have. Good luck.

I still don't believe you didn't have sex with that side piece

my dad was a career pharmaceutical rep, and one of the most tragic things i've ever witnessed was the absolute highest level of commitment and passion he put into learning the job, learning the doctors, and learning the products only to be eventually politely but firmly ushered into early retirement and replaced by an army of barely literate but drop dead gorgeous communications majors from A&M and Texas. i have a lot of reasons that i hate "big pharma" but that is the top one.

I worked with some salesmen and have some in my family... They seem to have a lot of free time on their hands.

You can get into tech sales within a month, but you'd have to start at the entry level BDR stage which usually has a salary of 55k and OTE of 75-85k (OTE = on target earnings = base salary + what you should make if you hit your quotas). Most people earn 65-90% of their OTE and a few blow way past it.
After 12-18 months of that you can get into the SMB AE space which usually pays 60-65k base with 120-130k OTE, then after 2-3 years of that up to mid market which runs 150-220k depending on the company and within about 5-7 years in total can start getting looks for enterprise roles for 220k to north of 300k.
Just depends if you can stomach that first year and a half.

Do not do this. There are plenty of sales jobs that are salaried base. Now, they top out modestly. Try looking into a salaried one and if you like it in general explore the commission role. Many companies have inside sales and outside sales. Some of the outside folks thrive depending on their knowledge and abilities. Some are horrible who fail miserably.

So not that they knowingly have killed people just to make money on drugs?

Don't blame big pharma for that...they're only doing what is providing the greatest boost to their numbers. Blame the doctors who value seeing an attractive female in their office more than they do anyone else who may provide more value to their practice and patients.
