How does someone use my stolen credit card info?

So Capital One just called me and asked me if I have been spending money at all these random gas stations in California. I said NO. I then check my credit card account and all these transactions for $125 are being made at random Shell Stations, Chevron Stations and other gas stations in the Los Angeles area. Totaling over $4000. WTF? My credit card sits in a drawer, I never even take it out with me since all I use it for is auto bill pay transactions to get the points and pay the balance in full each statement.
My question is how could someone steal the information first of all, and second, even if someone successfully stole my info, how could someone use this information at gas stations without the physical card? Perfect $125 transactions every time.

You might just qualify for a $125 award for having your information leaked

They change the magnetic strip on a different card so it has your cards information

Some tranny hacked capital one a while back and probably used your card to buy tranny stuff.

If you have any online presence you are likely getting emails weekly about data breaches etc. Your information isn't secure on any of the places you input it unfortunately

Dunno man but it’s going to take a few days of work for you to recoup your losses.

This makes sense.
Also trying to figure out how my info gets stolen in the first place. I rarely ever buy anything online but did buy something from Amazon last week.

Its literally been in the news quite alot the last week. You'd almost have to try and not see it.

Its quite easy to magnetize a blank card and replicate 2 of the 4 data tracks, which is all most older card readers need to verify.
This is why we're all transitioning to chip & pin

The European Union seems to lead the way on secure payment things. It’s not common that you give your card to a waiter to run off with the card. They have the pay at the table terminals.
PSD2 is their latest and greatest secure payment idea which is a 2 factor authentication. Given the current technology there’s no reason a pin can’t be sent quickly with a 4 byte code to validate the transaction. The “psd2” is going the direction of asking a stagnant question like for your mothers maiden name or fathers middle name.

I see where you are going with this dropping. You are setting up a payment from capful one because you saw it in the news last week. How did you not know they were hacked? I believe it was the largest ever.

They easily create a new card(s) and sell the CC number to others.

car skimmers at gas stations etc...
In my case they used the info to buy about 36 $500 gift cards at Walgreens.

Vice has a whole story on it.
First they take any blank card.
Then they use a machine to punch the numbers on it.
Then another machine adds the digital info to the stripe.
From just having your credit card number they make a clone of your card.
This video from Vice explains it and will piss you off.
