How do you start a career in Human Resources?

I have a degree but every position needs experience.
Should I apply for assistant jobs then try to move up he ladder? get certifications? cant really afford school right now.

See if you can get on somewhere as an HR generalist or something or even as a recruiting coordinator and then work your way up.
ETA: I'd venture to guess that at least 85% of recruiters are women.. so there's that. Just tell them you identify as a woman.

What gender & race are you? If you are a white male, especially a straight white male, you have little to no chance of being hired in most Human Resources Departments right now in America.

Just find a large company with a multi-person HR department. Small to mid-sized businesses don’t really need more than one person handling that.

Check into jobs with the Army (Civilian side). There are quite a few paid internship programs that get you in the door, and they usually offer classes and opportunities to further your education.
I have a sister with a Psych degree who went this route. The Army paid for two more masters and now she is working on her PhD. She's a GS-13 and makes $100k+ as a training developer.
You will have to travel (she has been all over the country), but it is generally paid for by the Army. She's settled now back in our hometown.
