Right BBQ = picnic

It is an event or a noun.

You are technically smoking when you are at a BBQ.

Grilling unless you are barbecuing something.

To call cooking anything on a grill "barbecuing" is trashy. And everyone from New Iberia calls it that.

If you're cooking a burger or a steak, then it's not BBQ. It's just grilling. A BBQ should take hours. Only people on the West Coast I've seen say BBQ when they mean burgers.

Growing up, we would say

"Come on over, we are bbq'ing today"

Could mean anything from burgers on the grill, to smoking a chicken in our smoker

But I am trash from Brusly.

I say I'm "cooking out". BBQ'ing sounds weird to me. But I guess it depends on what you grew up hearing.

Grilling. Only time I saw bbq'ing is if I'm eating a food that has bbq sauce on it.

If someone says come over for a BBQ and they're grilling burgers, then they don't know what they're talking about or what a BBQ is. The only people I've seen that say this are states that voted for Hillary. It's like someone telling me they're going to scramble some eggs, but then I get them poached instead.

I mean you could chose to believe this, but you would be wrong

ETA: I am not arguing you are incorrect about the actual term, but last I checked south la didnt vote for Hillary, and we knew the difference between all the different methods of cooking, but cooking outside was simply referred to as "bbqing"

Grilling or smoking. Texas. The only time I say BBQ is to describe a type of food or an event.
