Nawlins - Local

False. False false false

Now If you’re a local and probably black you say “noo-wahlins”

But no one says fricking nawlins

while no one says "nawlins", some people say "n'awlins" -- longer than "nawlins", but shorter than “noo-wahlins”

JUM-ba-lye...most people I know don’t say the “ya” at the end.

Grew up calling New Orleans New OR-le-yuns and I’m from there. I was speaking yat for a while.

Jum, been saying it that way my whole life. Never thought of it like jam.

That pronunciation is not yat.

It’s funny because I always thought that pronunciation was more of da blue collar Irish Channel dialect. I was definitely speaking yat at 6 when we moved out. Still make “grochreez” and put mynez on my poboys.

I’ve never heard anyone from Louisiana say Jam

I’ve never thought about it, but I’m from New Orleans and I think I pronounce it more “jam” than “jum.”

Traveled to Norfolk for work once and on my first day there spent about 6 hours in a crowded DMV. I learned the proper pronunciation pretty quick.

Nawlins - Local

Maybe a post Katrina local. Very cringeworthy when I hear pilots saying this when I’m deboarding.

Jam-balaya or Jum-balaya?

Being from Central Louisiana, I've said Jam-balaya all my life. Then I moved to Ascension, and people wince like they saw someone fall off a roof if you say it that way. It's Jum-balaya down here. So it depends on what part of the state you're from.
